My brother told me that our mum hit his wife, and I immediately sensed that something was wrong.

While I was on holiday, Mum rang me. She was in absolute pieceshysterical, sobbing uncontrollably, truly a state I could barely recognise. In a panic, I hung up and called my brother to try and find out what on earth was going on. His reaction was surprisingly harsh, telling me to ask her myself, as he seemed to know exactly why she was that upset. He even went as far as to say that Mum brought it on herself.
I was beside myself with worry, so my husband and I decided, with much reluctance, to cut our holiday short. The flights back to London were outrageously expensive, but family comes first.
When we arrived home, Mum was still terribly shaken and couldnt calm down. We made her a strong cup of tea and gave her a bit of valerian root to soothe her nerves, and then she finally told us what had happened. Apparently, when shed come home from work, shed been utterly shocked to see my sister-in-law covered in bruises, and, knowing she was pregnant, Mum had panicked even more. She rushed over to my sister-in-law, embraced her, and tried to find out what on earth had happened.
Just then, my brother walked in. As soon as he did, his wife got up and began screaming, leveling all sorts of accusations at Mum, saying shed been mistreating her.
Mum stood there, utterly bewildered, unable to piece together what was happening. My brother, convinced by his wifes account, was furious and straightaway threw Mum out of their house. Later, he took his wife to hospital, where she, sadly, miscarried. He wouldnt listen to reason, refused to speak to us, and nursed a giant grudge against Mum. I, however, couldnt shake the feeling that something wasnt quite adding up, so I chose to believe Mums side of the story.
Fortunately, the truth emerged, quite unexpectedly, from my sister-in-laws own friend, who turned out to be decent and honest. She told me the real story: it was all part of my sister-in-laws scheme to manipulate my brother into kicking Mum out. Shed taken steps herself to end the pregnancy. When my brother finally learnt the truth, he was livid, immediately told his wife to leave, and, with a heavy heart, apologised to Mum in earnest.
A mothers love really is forgiving, and despite the ordeal, Mum embraced her son back without a second thought.
