You Could Have Let Me Know—I’m Not Prepared! Do You Even Realise How Much It Costs to Host Guests?! …

Seriously, they could have given me a heads upI hadnt prepared anything! Do you know how expensive it is to host guests these days? My mother-in-law was practically shouting.

So, Im just your average daughter-in-lawa working woman, completely normal, definitely not sitting on some imaginary throne. My husband and I live in a flat in town, trying to manage everything ourselves: the mortgage, bills, jobs from early morning till late evening.

My mother-in-law lives out in the countryside, along with my sister-in-law. Everything would be fine, honestly, except they seem to think our flat is a weekend retreat. At first, it sounded quite sweet:

Well just pop over Saturday.

Wont stay long.

Were family!

Yeah, rightwont stay long actually means theyre sleeping over, and just popping over means theyll turn up with empty pots and hungry eyes, looking forward to a feast.

Every single weekend, it was the same old story: after work Id dash to the shops, cook, clean, set the table, force a smile, and then spend half the night scrubbing dishes and tidying up. My mother-in-law, Valerie, just sits there passing comments:

Why isnt there sweetcorn in the salad?

I do like my stew richer, you know.

We wouldnt do it this way in the village.

And my sister-in-law chimes in:

Oh, Im so tired from the journey.

And theres no dessert?

Did I ever hear a thank you? Or Can I help with anything? Not once.

One day, I just lost patience and told my husband:

Im not the maid and I dont want to be serving your family every single weekend.

Maybe we should actually do something about this.

That was my lightbulb moment.

Next time, Valerie calls up and says:

Were coming to yours this Saturday.

Oh, weve got plans for the weekend, I reply calmly.

What sort of plans?

Just our own.

And you know what? We actually did have plansat Valeries! Saturday morning, my husband and I turned up at her doorstep. She answers the door and just stands there stunned.

Whats going on?!

Weve come to visit. Wont stay long.

She starts panicking: You should have told me! I havent prepared anything! Do you know how much it costs to host guests?

I just looked at her, nice and relaxed, and said:

Well, you see, thats how Ive been living every weekend.

So you decided to teach me a lesson? How dare you!

She kicked up such a fuss the whole neighbourhood must have been watching, and we ended up heading home.

But heres the funny part: since then, theres never been a visit without an invitation. No more well just drop by and no more spending my weekends as the kitchen staff. Sometimes, to be heard, you just have to let people see what its really like to walk in your shoes.

What do you reckondid I do the right thing? What would you have done in my place?
