A Whole Year Spent Giving Money to Our Grown-Up Son to Pay Off His Loan! I Refuse to Give a Penny Mo…

A whole year of handing money over to the kids just to cover their mortgage! There wont be another penny from me!

My husband and I have just one child, a grown-up son. Hes started his own family, and were grandparents now.

I grew up in post-war England and didnt marry until I was 30, which was seen as leaving it rather late at the time. Back then, everyone expected you to settle down and have children immediately. To be childless was almost unthinkable, quite like having some dreadful disease in the eyes of the community.

Well, my husband and I had our son and decided that was quite enough. Being sensible, educated people, we understood how expensive it is to raise a child. And the more children you have, the greater the financial strain.

Thats precisely why we stopped at one. As a result, we managed to provide our son with a good upbringing, a solid education, and establish comfortable lives for ourselves.

Our son, however, took a rather different view. Shortly after he got married, his wife fell pregnant and soon our grandson was born. The young couple didnt have a home of their own, so they took out a mortgage. Somehow, they kept up with the payments each month. Soon after, we found out our daughter-in-law was expecting again. Naturally, I asked how they planned to maintain two children and pay off their mortgage. They took offence and insisted theyd manage on their own. I told them that was fine, as long as they could cope.

For quite a while, they seemed to manage. Then, our daughter-in-law had to stop working and our son was made redundant. What were they to do? They decided to move into the flat weve been renting out. My husband said hed help them cover the mortgage. So, for a full year, he and I paid their mortgage from our own pockets, thinking we were doing the right thing by helping the younger generation. But it didnt turn out that way.

I found out recently that the mortgage hadnt actually been paid its six months in arrears. Where has all the money gone? My husband is fuming, saying he cant do this anymore. Im stunned. I honestly dont know what to say or do. We tried to help our kids and, instead, they just relied on us, taking it easy. So now, what are we supposed to do?
