I got married at fifty, sure Id finally found happiness, but I had no idea what lay ahead

Im one of those men who married later in life. Sadly, my late-blooming relationship didnt turn out as I hoped.

I was always called the bookworm by everyone, and truth be told, I always did love to learn. I finished my masters degree and settled into work as a librarian. Thats when a friend introduced me to the woman whod become my wifeher name was Emily. She was fifty-nine, not the type to despair, but rather hoping to find a husband. I was nine years her junior. Emily won me over right awaysmart, well-mannered, with a fondness for poetry and literature. We started chatting, and before I knew it, a few months had gone by and she asked me to marry her.

I agreed at onceafter all, Id wanted a family for a long time. After the wedding, we moved into my place, since her daughter and grandson were already living in her flat in Bristol. To be honest, I really had no clue what I was in for. Id always lived alone until then, and having someone else in my space sent my routine into a tailspin. Spills on the tablecloth, the duvet left in a heap, socks strewn about, and all sorts of little happenings that didnt fit into the tidy plans Id kept for myself. Everything grated on my nerves. It felt as though Emily was on holiday at a hotel and I was the staff, running around doing every little thing. She also had no head for financeswhen a tap broke, rather than fixing it, she broke it further and only then called out a plumber.

On the day that happened, I realised I didnt want to spend my days biting my tongue and bottling things up. Were adults, set in our ways, and our habits simply clashed. Not long after that tap incident, we had a frank conversation. As it turned out, she was perfectly content with the arrangement. Im not one for rowsI like to keep the peacebut we couldnt come to a proper solution. Emilys daughter had already sorted out her own future in her mothers flat, assuming Emily would always live with me. It took a full three months before Emily agreed to a divorce. She asked for the gifts shed given me backbut handing back things like the bin and an old necklace was no loss for me.

All this has made me wonder if its even possible to build a truly happy life together after the age of fifty. If I learned anything, its that love at any age can surprise youbut compromise and understanding are a must, no matter how old you are.
