Our Relatives Came to Visit and Brought Us Gifts—But Soon Demanded We Put Them Out on the Table

So, you wont believe what happened the other daymy family came round for a visit and brought a bunch of gifts with them. You know whats funny? Not long after they arrived, they started dropping hints about wanting the things theyd brought to be put out on the table!

Let me set the scene: theyd let us know ahead of timetheyre not the sort to just show up unannounced, thankfully. I had already made it clear over the phone that we werent exactly flush with cash at the moment, just living simply, scraping by. Its not like were starving or anything, just on the modest side. Between my state pension and my sons not-exactly-glamorous salary, theres not much room for extra frills, let alone guests. They knew this, but still, they turned uparms full of food and little gifts, which was thoughtful, I suppose.

My son thanked them, and I quickly tucked the gifts away out of sight. As Id mentioned, were hardly rolling in it. For lunch, all we could manage was some sliced bread and butter, a pack of biscuits, and a pot of tea. You should’ve seen the looks on their faces! It was as if theyd bitten into a rotten lemon. But no one said a word, and honestly, I wasnt botheredI had been upfront that we didnt have much and we just had to make do. We offered what was in the kitchen.

Later, for dinner, it was a simple soup, a bit more bread, some cheese spread, a few sandwiches with cold meats, and of course, more tea. They must have hoped for a proper spread, maybe a roast and all the trimmings, because the disappointment on their faces was practically written in bold. At that point one of them even piped up, asking why I hadnt served out the bits theyd brought. I was honestly taken abackwerent those supposed to be gifts for us? Had they actually brought it all for themselves? If they wanted their own stuff, surely they just had to say so I could pop it in the fridge!

It turned into a full-on squabble, with them moaning and us just trying to keep our cool. By the next morning, they packed up their things and left in a bit of a strop. To be frank, I couldnt care less where they went off to nextI really dont need that sort of atmosphere in my home. The silver lining? They left behind some cakes, a bit of liver, some meringues, and a few bits of fruitso at least theres a little something of use. Tonight, my son and I will put the kettle on, enjoy a lovely cup of tea, and tuck into those leftover cakes. At least something decent came out of it!
