Youre doing rather well for yourself, arent you? My wifes younger sister borrowed money and scarpered off to Brighton for a holiday.

This summer, my wifes beloved sister came down to visit us. In the family, everyone calls her the golden child because at every get-togetherMum, Dad, the lotthey only ever talk about her. She was top of her class in school, aced university, landed a job in her chosen fieldyoud think she was the perfect daughter.

Meanwhile, my wifethe eldestdidnt even finish her studies before she got married. Nobody seemed to mind, though, as I had done fairly well for myself, running my own business. Id bought a flat, owned a decent car, and had a comfortable income. Despite all that, the prize daughter title always went to my wifes younger sister.

So, this summer, she turned up at ours and asked to borrow some money because she wanted to put down a deposit for a flat and didnt have the funds. The sum wasnt much in my eyes, so I didnt hesitate to lend her what she needed. She said she worked for the council and promised to pay it back on time.

She borrowed the money, practically swore on her life shed pay it back every month. Then, barely a week later, shed packed her bags and headed off to Brighton for a seaside holiday. Honestly, I was baffledhow could someone who supposedly didnt have enough for a deposit suddenly find the money for a trip to the coast?

She told the family shed been saving up all year for her holiday, but heres the thing: she still hadnt applied for a mortgage. When I asked her about it, she said shed changed her mind.

I politely asked her if she might start repaying the loan, since Id given her the money expecting it to be used for a flat, not for a holiday. Her response was rather insulting:
“Ill be making loads soon, you can wait, I simply havent got the money at the moment.”

So, how do you think it all ended? Well, of course, she went and told my mother-in-law that I was demanding the money back ahead of schedule, that family shouldnt behave like thatand just like that, the youngest was back on her angelic pedestal, while we became the heartless, well-off monsters.
