Something Strange Happened to My Stepfather: He Decided to Leave His Entire Estate to the Son He Hasn’t Spoken to in 30 Years…
I was ten years old when my father left my mother.
She handled it with remarkable grace, and that was when I realised how much I wanted to be as strong as she was. My mum never spoke ill of my dad, even though hed been unfaithful and at times lost his temper. She referred to him only as my father, always choosing to share positive stories about him. In the end, it was as if fate rewarded her kindness, and she met my stepfather, Richard.
This was also Richards second marriage. Things hadnt gone well in his first. His ex-wife regularly reminded him what a disappointment he was for not earning enough. Eventually, he couldnt take the criticism any longer and left. The only reason he maintained any contact with his ex-wife was for their son.
After Richards divorce, his life began to look up. He met my mum, who loved him deeply and supported him in every way. In time, he was promoted at work, and his salary rose considerably. Within two years, he bought a lovely house, and even began saving up for a car. When his ex-wife found out how well things were going, she turned up wanting to reconcile, but by then it was far too late. When he refused, she forbade their son from seeing him.
Richard became more of a father to us than our own ever had. He truly cared and loved ushe spent time with us, took interest in our lives, and encouraged our hobbies. At last our family felt whole and happy; it was wonderful seeing Mum smile again.
Many years passed. My sister and I both grew up, built our own families, and Mum and Dadbecause by then that was how I referred to Richardretired and enjoyed their later years together. I was certain that everything would always go well for them Until, one day, my mother called me, asking me to come quickly.
I knew straight away that something had happened to Richard. My mum wouldn’t have called like that otherwise.
Something awful had happened with my stepfather, because he had decided to leave everything he owned to his sonwhom hed not spoken to in thirty years. Neither my sister nor I ever expected anything from him, but we had hoped he might at least leave the house to my mum. She had put so much into making it a home and now, heaven forbid, if anything were to happen to him, shed have nowhere to go.
Mum cried for a long time, and I tried to comfort her. I simply couldnt understand why my stepfather would do that to her
Through it all, I learnt that true kindness means giving without expecting in return. But ultimately, we should never tie our happiness too closely to things that might be taken awaya loving heart and inner strength are worth more than any house or inheritance.
