Emily married when she was twenty, and by twenty-two had her first and only child. She never felt drawn to children. After her son was born, Emily and her husband handed him over to his grandmother for care. They would send her money each month, and enjoyed their freedom. Two years on, circumstances required them to bring their son home and the grandmother passed away. Emily felt annoyed at her sons presence and enrolled him in nursery to see him less, then later placed him in primary school.

At school, the boy struggledhe couldnt read or write, and classmates made fun of him. The teachers tried to reach his parents, but Emily was always too busy. Eventually, her husband attended a meeting with the teachers, who told him about the boys difficulties and behaviour. Afterwards, the father took out his anger on his son. When the boy completed school, Emily sent him to work at a local factory. There, he met his future wife. The factory management granted them a flat. When Emily became a grandmother, she felt no warmth towards her grandkids.

Occasionally, she would send some money on Christmas or birthdays. Eventually, Emily retired. She wanted to throw an extravagant celebration, so she turned to her son. I’ve transferred you some pounds. Go with Mary and buy food and decorations. Well celebrate my retirement at yours. Alright, Mum. Her son and daughter-in-law sent their kids to stay in the countryside, so they wouldnt be underfoot, and set about preparing for the party. When all was ready, Emily arrived and looked pleased. Not bad. Now, off to the kitchen.

Guests are arrivingwe need to greet them, and Ill sit down with you afterwards. The son and his wife did as Emily asked and stayed in the kitchen. The guests feasted and danced all night. When everyone had left, Emily entered the kitchen, saying, Theres a bit of cake left, share it between you. Im not feeling well; were going home, so I cant sit with you. Her son felt deeply hurt. A week later, Emily called, Son, Im going into hospital for an operation. Bring me some thingsIll text you the list. Sorry, Mum, Mary and I are off on holiday. Youll have to ring Dad. Bye. In that moment, Emily finally realised life doesnt just revolve around one persona lesson in kindness shed long overlooked.
