Divine Retribution: After my husband abandoned me and our children with no money to survive, fate struck back and he was involved in an accident a year later.

Looking back, I spent over fifteen years with my husband, Tom. We began our lives together from scratch. After we married, we lived with his mother in London and commuted together every morning to the local manufacturing plant. Eventually, we were assigned a room in a workers lodgings, and at last moved out of Toms mums house into our own little space.

Things seemed to be going smoothly. I realised Tom would need a proper education if he ever wanted to get ahead. I persuaded him to sign up for evening courses and, truthfully, did most of his assignments myselfwriting his reports, essays, all his papers. Once he earned his diploma and handed it in at work, he got himself a promotion. I was thrilled for him, honestly. My own career didn’t pan out so well. Although I’d finished university, I kept landing in the same spoton maternity leave. As our son, Jack, grew, I ended up pregnant again with our daughter, Sophie. Later, I tried to get back into working, but both kids seemed to catch every bug going. I was forever taking time off to look after them.

Still, I didn’t let it get me down. Maybe my career went nowhere, but my family life was full. Tom worked late most nights, pushing hard at the office. Within a few months, we managed to buy ourselves a spacious flat in Manchester. The kids were ecstaticthey finally had their own bedrooms. But I saw less and less of Tom.

Not long later, I bumped into an old work mate, Sarah, who confided that her own husband was cheating with someone he managed. Honestly, they dont even try to hide it, she said. Sometimes right there in broad daylighthell lock himself in his office, buy her presents, even hug her in front of people. You ought to leave him, shameless that he is. Hearing that, I resolved to go to Toms workplace, have a word with his mistress, and ask her to leave my husband alone for the sake of his family.

The girl mocked me in front of everyone, laughing as I pleaded. My husbands new flame was a sight to behold, and there I was, heartbroken and humiliated. She said I should pay more attention to myself, get fit, and essentially dismissed my pain.

Tom walked out of his office, saw me there, and instantly got angry. Whats going on? Youve figured it all out, then? Good, because Im tired of living a double life. Ill start divorce proceedings tomorrow. He wasted no timehired the best solicitors in the city, took everything from me, and threw me and the kids out onto the street. He couldnt have cared less about our wellbeing or whether we had anything to live on. Tom was swept up in passion for his new girlfriend, hardly sparing me or the children a glance.

My parents stepped in to help us. With their support, I managed to buy a modest flat in Birmingham and finally got myself a steady job. Life began to settle down; things felt manageable. A year later, Tom rang up, demanding help. Not a word of apology for his cheating, not even a hint of remorse. Still full of arrogance, thinking he deserved my assistance. Turns out, hed lost his job and his new wife had left him high and dry. Then, after a car accident, he was stuck in hospital.

I refused to help. He abandoned us, took everything, never called or cared. Now he was left on his own, and it was my turn to walk away. If theres anything Ive learned, its this: never let someone trample your dignity, and always be prepared to stand on your own two feet.
