Once, while Noah was dozing in a patch of sunlight, he became aware that his cuddly hedgehog was nowhere to be found. Jolted from slumber, Noah wandered the halls of his home, peering behind sofas and under beds, calling softly for his beloved companion. The hedgehog was nowhere to be seena mystery that made the whole house feel hollow and echoey, as if time itself had lost its way.

Days drifted by like clouds, each a little greyer, until Noah, full of longing, imagined his hedgehog had perhaps wandered off to Oxford or taken a fanciful trip beyond the garden gate without so much as a note. He missed the prickly friend terribly; the absence left an odd emptiness, as if part of him had vanished to a distant corner of England.

Weeks later, destiny tiptoed in, and Noah stumbled on the hedgehog nestled deep behind old coats in his wardrobe, as if hiding from an autumn rain. The hedgehog, whose name was Benson, greeted Noah with silent joy; they began their rituals anew, traipsing from room to room, the bond undisturbed by time or separation.

Noah took Benson everywhere now, tucked under his arm like a cherished talisman. When his cousin Emily spoke about mending magic, she meant their grandmothers nimble fingers and needleher skill legendary in the family for making torn things whole. Grandmother fixed the hedgehog so beautifully that Benson seemed brighter and softer than ever, glinting in the morning light.

Noah wept happy tears and held his grandmothers hand, grateful beyond words for her care. The moment shimmered with dreamlike warmth, and in the gentle air of the sitting room, Noah knew that nothing was quite as real or precious as the love stitched quietly into the seams of his family.
