My fiancé’s parents made an unusual request, asking me and my parents to provide health certificates. This was followed by a demand from my future mother-in-law that I simply couldn’t tolerate.
Most of the time, pairing up follows old traditions here, but, as I’ve seen from friends and family, things arent always smooth and tension can easily arise between the families involved. In my case, the issues began with my fiancés parents, and his mother was the first to speak up. Her main demand was that I undergo a medical examination before the engagement moved forward. At first, I brushed it off, even though it shocked me. My parents were equally baffled, dismissing the idea as nonsense, but my future mother-in-law simply wouldnt let it go.
To my astonishment, she insisted that not only I, but all members of my family, provide medical certificates. This was entirely foreign to us. My father couldnt contain his irritation and left the room to avoid a row. I felt incredibly embarrassed and uncomfortable, while my fiancé sat quietly, clearly aware of what his parents expected. Later that evening, I learned that my mother-in-law had arranged separate bedrooms for me and my fiancé. I tried to accept it as a family tradition and respected their wishes, though it felt awfully strange.
Before saying goodnight, my future mother-in-law informed me that wed need to visit a solicitors office first thing the next morning to draft and sign a marriage contract. That was the last straw for me. I assured her Id be ready, but in reality, I decided to leave. I packed my bags in silence and slipped away in the night. I cut all ties with him on social media, changed my mobile number, and made sure there was no way to reach meI wanted nothing more to do with him or his peculiar family.
As I reflected on everything, it became clear how important it is to protect my boundaries, my freedom, and my rights. It was vital for me to realise that these had been trespassed. My advice to other young women is to take care of themselves and never tolerate mistreatment or disrespect. No one has the right to encroach on your rights and freedom, so dont hesitate to walk away from any situation where you arent treated with the dignity you deserve.
