I first met Emily at a gathering organised by mutual friends in London. At that moment, I felt an overwhelming affection for her; my heart was racing with excitement. Our relationship blossomed quickly, but my father still had his reservations. He cautioned me, saying Emily might not be genuine in her feelings, suggesting she could be seeking financial gain. I was slightly annoyed and dismissed the idea, explaining I hadnt even revealed the extent of our familys wealth to her yet. Nevertheless, Dad advised me to keep that information to myself for as long as possible, to assess whether Emilys love was truly heartfelt.

After considering his words, I concluded that this approach could be worth a try. I had nothing to lose, and at least Id know for certain if my wife truly cared for me. Emily and I agreed on a modest wedding and moved into one of the several flats my family owned. I deliberately chose the most humble one, making it seem like a small inheritance from my grandmother. Over the next six months, we lived a normal life. I went to work and earned a rather average wage, while Emily managed our finances so we could get by each month.

Half a year later, I decided it was time to be honest and live openly. I bought a bouquet of flowers and prepared myself for the confession. However, when I arrived home, I found Emily packing her things. She said, Darling, my friends originally told me about your inheritance, and thats why I agreed to be with you. But it turns out youre just ordinary, and I cant live like this. Im leaving you for someone wealthier. I stood there, stunned by the revelation. Eventually, I replied in a cool tone, Your friends were right. I simply wanted to see your true intentions, and youve proven they revolve around money. My father was right all along. Despite Emily begging for forgiveness later, I stood firm in my decision, refusing to reconcile.

Reflecting on it all, I realise how fortunate I am to have listened to my fathers wisdom. Its a hard lesson, but I know now that sincerity matters more than superficial allure.
