My Father-in-law Assumed We’d Keep Paying His Way

Published

on

My wife grew up in a warm and loving household with both her parents. However, when my father-in-law turned 57, tragedy struck and his wife passed away. It was a difficult time for him, understandably. So, we decided to sell his flat, split the proceeds between our family and my brother-in-laws family, and have my father-in-law stay with us until he could get back on his feet. Thats what we did.

I figured hed be with us for half a year, maybe, before hed find a place of his own and move out, but that didnt happen. He grew very fond of living here. He never chips in for bills or food shopping. Im the one cooking his meals, doing his laundry and cleaning his room, while he simply goes to work. Honestly, it’s more like a holiday home for him.

This arrangement went on for eleven years. Over time, he started getting involved in every aspect of our lives, telling us how we ought to do things. Eventually, we decided it was best to buy him a cottage not far from the city so he could manage on his own. Hes a tall, strong man in good health, so theres no reason he cant live independently.

We purchased the house, furnished it, and made sure it had everything hed need. But my father-in-law began spinning tales about chest pains and other ailmentsanything to stay with us, really. But I cant deal with this anymore. Im exhausted.
