We Were Driving Down the Motorway When a Massive Bear Suddenly Darted onto the Road and Began Slowly Approaching Our Car
We were driving along the A3, the road twisting through the edge of a thick forest, when all of a sudden a massive brown bear lumbered onto the tarmac just ahead of us, ambling straight towards our car. Frozen in terror, we were absolutely convinced the beast was about to attackuntil something completely unexpected happened
We had set out for home, just chatting and looking forward to a cup of tea by the fire. The road was slick with drizzle, and the grey clouds pressed low above the treetops. There was nothing to suggest anything out of the ordinary would occur.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, this enormous bear sprang into the road right in front of us. My wife, Emma, slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a shuddering halt. My heart was pounding in my chest. The bear halted only a metre from the bonnet, then rose up onto its hind legs, looming above the car. Its presence was menacingit looked like it was sizing us up, preparing to strike.
For a few moments, it just stared straight at us. Its gaze was fixed, cold, and unblinking. Then it started moving slowly, purposefully, towards my door. I was certain hunger had driven it this close. I remember thinking that, in a second, it would be on us. The closed doors and windows suddenly felt like no protection at all.
Emma slipped the car into reverse and began to ease us back, ever so gently. Both of us knew: if it chose to attack, we hadn’t a hope. I was rooted to the spot, my eyes fixed on the bear.
And just at that moment, something completely out of the blue happened, leaving us both in utter shock.
A giant old oak, which had stood hulking at the side of the road for decades, suddenly crashed down with an almighty roar. It missed our car by barely a hairs breadthanother foot and wed have been crushed. By pure luck, we lived to tell the tale.
The bear, alarmed by the deafening noise, whipped round, took one last look at us, and tore off into the woods. Within seconds, it had disappeared among the trees. The woods fell silent againas if nothing had happened at all.
I keep thinking about that day. Was the bear genuinely planning to attack us, or was it warning us somehow? Or did the crash simply scare it off? I dont suppose Ill ever know. But Ill never be able to forget the way it stared.
