Love Triumphs Over Betrayal

You know, I want to tell you about something that still gives me chills thinking about it. So, Mary came to live with Emily and Richard when their son, Oliver, was just a baby. She wasnt just a nanny to that boyshe was a real guardian angel. Emily, though, was always wrapped up in her own world. Shed look on, wounded, as Oliver ran to Mary whenever he was upset. And in Emilys heart, a nasty bit of jealousy began to growshe just couldnt handle how close her son was to someone else.

By the time Oliver had turned eight, Emily had made up her mind: Mary had to go. Richard, her husband, was dead against firing herhe knew Mary was kind and reliable. But Emily went down a dark path. She planted her own diamond necklace under Marys mattress and then had the police come round. Poor Maryweeping with disbeliefwas sent down for two years. Oliver clung to her for dear life when they hauled her away in handcuffs, but in the end he was dragged off, too.

Twenty years floated by. Oliver was twenty-eight now and doing well for himself. Still, he never stopped longing for the warmth and kindness Mary had given him. Meanwhile, Emily fell seriously ill. She was stuck in that awful limbodeath seemed to hover at her door but never quite entered. The suffering was just unbearable.

One night, Emily called for her son. Sobbing, she finally confessed the truth:
Ollie, I just cant die… Death wont come for me, because Ive committed a terrible sin. I ruined an innocent womans life. Pleasefind Mary. Bring her here. I beg you.

So, Oliver tracked Mary down, living on the very edge of town in a cosy little cottage. Shed aged, her hands were roughened from years of hard graft, but her eyes were just the samegentle and full of forgiveness.

Mum Mary Oliver whispered as he held her. My own mother wants to see you. Shes leaving us soon, and only your forgiveness will bring her peace.

Mary didnt think twiceshe came straight back with him. When they went into the bedroom, Emilyfrail and exhaustedshuddered at the sight of her.

Hello, Mary she whispered, reaching out a trembling hand.

Mary went to her and gently took her hand in hers.

Im so sorry, Mary. Im so sorry for what I did. I sinned before God, and Ive been paying for it ever since. God refuses to take me until you forgive me

Mary looked at the woman who had sent her to prison all those years ago, but her heart was clearno anger left.

I forgave you long ago, Emily. Rest in peace.

Emily let out a huge sigh of relief. Her features softened. She looked one last time at her son, then at Mary:

My son hes your trust now. Look after him.

That very night, Emily slipped away. And Mary finally became Olivers true mother, taking a rightful place in his home. He surrounded her with the love shed missed out on for all those years. Before long, Oliver met an amazing woman, married her, and Mary blessed their marriage just like any devoted grandmother would. Truth won out in the end, and kindness healed every wound left by the past.
