My mother-in-law keeps taking my kids’ toys and giving them to my brother-in-law’s son
My husband and I have been married for ten years. Our family is the sort others admire, but lately we’ve been facing some challenges. After our children came along, we had to adjust to a whole new way of living.
One afternoon, I realised some of the childrens toys were missinghigh-end ones, not just common bits and bobs. I asked the children, searched our house in London from top to bottom, but couldnt find them anywhere. It felt rather mysterious. My husband hunted around as well, but to no avail.
My mother-in-law is often at our home. She adores playing with her grandchildren. Usually, we share tea together and then she heads off to the nursery to play. But recently, she only popped in for a brief moment before leaving, which was unusual.
Soon after, I noticed another toy had vanished. I asked everyone in the house, but nobody admitted to playing with it. Then, my son remembered seeing his grandma holding the toy, putting it into her handbag, and leaving. My husband decided to speak with his mother about it.
A couple of days later, we had friends over, and the matter slipped our minds. We only remembered when my husband’s mum left early. This time, another one of the childrens toys was peeking out of her bag.
I confronted her. I wanted to wash them, she told me.
I knew that wasnt true. Eventually, she confessed. Shed been taking the toys to give to her sister-in-laws son, since apparently she couldnt afford gifts herself and wanted to make the little boy happy.
We talked it over, and she promised not to do it again. Yet, the toys kept disappearing. My husband ended up having a serious argument with his mother about stealing and gifting the childrens toys.
Things got so bad that the kids themselves noticed. They asked their grandmother not to visit anymore because she kept taking their belongings. Now, whenever my mother-in-law wants to come round, we invent endless excuses to avoid her visits.
In the end, its clear: our actions do have consequences, and honesty within the family is vital. Trust, once broken, is hard to rebuild, and everyone deserves to feel secure in their own home.
