My Mum Told Me Not to Tell My Friends That I Come from a Wealthy Family

Published

on

I was at Rebeccas place when her dad turned up. He brought in some groceries and found us sitting in the lounge. Straight away, he lifted his chin and made it obvious he wasnt at all pleased I was there. Rebecca took him into the kitchen, but I could still hear him, his voice sharp and cutting. He called me a country lad and claimed I was after Rebeccas flat. He said hed noticed me hanging about outside his daughter’s house more than once, almost accusing me outright of being some sort of stalker.

What struck me most was how Rebecca responded to him. She played along, saying we just happened to be working monthly shifts together at the university library, which explained why I was often around. The truth is, wed been seeing each other for nearly two months by then. Id managed to tell Rebecca that just because my parents had a house in the suburbs didnt mean I was some bumpkin. We actually lived quite close to the city centre in a nice two-storey home, and my dad ran his own business. Sure, I dont drive any fancy foreign cars or shout out that I come from a well-off family, but I prefer it that way. Its a good way to weed out people like Rebecca and her family.

My mum always told me never to talk about money or any wealth, as the person you love shouldnt care about that first and foremost. And honestly, nobody should feel embarrassed about me, even if I dont appear wealthy on the surface.
