An elderly tycoon devised a treasure hunt for his children and grandchildren, hiding cash and leaving clever clues to be found.

Just after sunrise, extended family members gathered anxiously at a solicitors office in Manchester. Whispers filled the room, everyone hoping the late Mr. Adam had left a tidy sum to each of them. The solicitor was running late, heightening everyones nerves.

How much longer must we wait? I just need to know if my father left me anything, then I can be off, Adams eldest daughter, Charlotte, fretted.

Charlotte, you ought to show some restraint. You should be mourning. You do remember your fathers just passed, dont you? said Mike, Adams son.

Stop calling me Aunt. Im not ready for that title yet, Charlotte retorted, her eyes flashing. Call me Charlotte, nothing else.

Mike scoffed. All the lipstick in Liverpool wont make you any younger, Charlotte.

The tension hung thick in the air until, finally, the solicitor entered, briefcase in hand. He gave everyone a measured look and removed a sheaf of documents from his leather case.

Are you prepared for the reading? he asked. The group nodded, anticipation palpable. The solicitor opened the will, a secretive smile flitting across his face, and began reading Adams final words.

To those I leave behind, you will inherit but only if you can find it. When I was a child, I lived with my parents in the Yorkshire countryside. Life was simple but blissful. In our old family cottage, theres a safe. All the money is inside, but youll need the key. The solicitor will give you a map, and you must abide by the rules. Best of luck, my dears!

A stunned silence followed. It seemed, even in death, Adam couldnt resist another of his notorious games. Charlotte was the first to break the silence. My husband and I are heading to Yorkshire right now. Whos with me?

Mike shook his head. Charlotte and I are out. Dad loved his riddles; I bet theres a twist. We dont need his pounds.

So Charlotte, her husband, and various relatives drove to the rural village. They followed clues, scoured the old barn for hints, sifted through hay, and crawled through muck. Locals paused their morning routines to watch the drama unfold. Charlottes stylish dress was soon a sorry sightmud-stained and torn.

At last, they found the key and opened the safe. The room froze. Inside was nothing but a note and a heap of boiled sweets.

All the money went to charity. You got what you deserved. Thank you for entertaining my fellow villagers and making them smile.

Shock and disappointment filled the room, the game had ended, and Adam had the last laugh.
