Emily is deeply in love with James, believing hes the ideal partner. Although she dreams of marrying him, Emilys father doesnt approve of her choice. Her mother, on the other hand, warms to James after he shows up to their first meeting clutching an enormous bouquet of flowers. Despite this, Emilys father remains sceptical about James. Hes noticed that when James first invited Emily out for dinner, she ended up footing the bill because James claimed his bank card didnt have enough funds. On top of this, James is unemployed, always insisting hes searching for a job, but never securing one.

Still, James proposes to Emily and she gladly accepts. With her mothers support, she manages to win over her father. He gives his blessing, but warns Emily that shell have to be the primary breadwinner, since James is unlikely to offer much support. He makes it clear that he wont be giving any financial aid to her husband.

Despite her fathers protests, Emily moves forward with the wedding. Her father helps with the celebration, gives them half the family car, and agrees to pay their rent. Emilys friends are envious of how much her father is doing for her. For the first two months after the wedding, everything seems peacefulbut soon enough, problems crop up. James struggles to find work, and, exactly as her father predicted, Emily becomes the sole provider in their household.

One day, Emilys mother-in-law suggests to her father that he offer James a respectable job. Emily approaches her father with the idea and, eventually, he hires James as an assistant at his steelworks. However, James quickly finds the work unbearable and resigns after only ten days. Upset, he confronts Emily, complaining that her father is belittling him by offering menial positions and insisting that he deserves a managerial role.

Emily turns to her father for advice once more, and he questions her husbands qualifications. It turns out that James never even finished university, blaming fallouts with his tutors. Despite this, James still believes hes suited for any senior position, with no real education or skills to back him up.

Emilys father is furious about this discovery, reminding her that people have to work hard for years to earn managerial posts. He refuses to entrust such a role to someone unqualified and tells Emily plainly that he wont support her husband. He warns her again, but she doesnt heed his words.

Later, James reveals his true intentions to Emily, admitting he doesnt love her and had only viewed the marriage as a short-term arrangement. He hints at divorce and asks her to prepare to split their shared assets. Nevertheless, hes been outmanoeuvredEmilys father, worried about this possibility, had already registered the flat under his own name to safeguard against such an outcome.
