My Fiancé’s Parents Made an Unusual Request, Asking Me and My Parents to Present Health Certificates — Then My Future Mother-in-Law Made a Demand I Just Couldn’t Handle

Usually, arranging a match follows long-held English traditions, but as my friends and family have shown, these customs can create unexpected tensions between the families involved. In my case, the friction started with my fiancés parents, who immediately took centre stage. Their chief demand was that I undergo a thorough medical examination. At first, I brushed it off, although the request unsettled me deeply. My own parents were just as taken aback and dismissed it outright as nonsense. However, my future mother-in-law was far from satisfied with their response.

To my astonishment, she insisted not only that I, but every member of my family present medical certificates. The idea was utterly foreign to us. My father, unable to restrain his irritation, walked out to avoid an argument. I felt exposed and uncomfortable, while my fiancé simply sat there, perfectly aware of what his parents expected. Later that evening, I discovered my future mother-in-law had prepared separate rooms for my fiancé and me, something I assumed must be a quirky family tradition, and I decided to accept it, even though it felt strange.

Before bidding me goodnight, my future mother-in-law informed me that the following morning, we were to visit the solicitors office early to draw up and sign a marriage contract. This was more than I could stomach. I assured her Id be ready, but instead, I made the decision to leave. I packed my bags and left in the dead of night. I blocked my fiancé and his family on social media and changed my phone number, wanting nothing more to do with them or their peculiar ways. It was crucial for me to admit that my boundaries and rights had been disregarded. My advice to other young women is this: look after yourselves, and never accept mistreatment or disrespect. No one has the right to violate your freedom or dignity, so dont hesitate to walk away from any situation where you arent valued as you deserve.
