My Dad Refused to Marry Mum Because His Family Needed Long Holidays

Published

on

When my grandmother discovered that her daughtermy mumwas expecting a baby with no husband in sight, she was absolutely scandalised. She made my mums life a misery, but my mum weathered all the snide remarks and melodramatic sighs with quiet patience.

On my birthday, Granny locked my mum in the house and wandered off, taking the only key. Luckily, my sister, a retired paramedic, happened to be around, grabbed the key and dashed to rescue Mum. Thats how I made my grand entrance into the world, and despite the whole drama, Mum adored me from day one.

My grandmother, whose age could be measured in geological eras, did teach me a few useful thingshow to identify weeds, dig potatoes, and grumble about the weather. I was pretty good at some of it, but whenever I mucked it up, shed unleash a barrage of words that I didnt fully understand as a kid, though I sensed I wasnt exactly being praised. I never did grasp why she was so frosty with mewhy I wasnt the apple of her eye or what dreadful deed Id done. Youd think she wouldve known better; she herself had wrestled with raising children alone after losing her husband, surely she appreciated how tough it was.

I grew up without a whiff of masculine affectionno grandfather, no father, no brother, not even a bloke next door to throw a cricket ball around with.

Eventually, Mum married and had two more kids, though sadly her husband didnt make it very far. To my surprise, Granny showered her new grandkids with more love than shed ever bothered with for me. I couldnt help but feel a little green with envy.

Grannys been gone for years, and Im no longer a child, but now and then I recall my peculiar childhood, feeling like a lone dandelion amongst roses. Her biting words still echo in my mind, stirring up those old feelings.

One afternoon, while shopping with Mum, we ran into a woman filling her trolley with fruit and sweets. She beamed and announced that her daughter was about to become a mum herself, and the wedding was just round the corner. Everyone in the village knew Victorias daughter didnt have a husband, but the womans honesty and heartfelt love for her child touched my mum deeply, evoking memories of her own trials, and all the curses shed had to swallow over the years.

I love my mum tremendously, and Im forever grateful that she braved everything for me. She never once treated me poorly. Her motherly affection is boundlesspure and genuine.

As for what Id have done in my grandmothers shoes, its hard to say without marching a mile through her wellies. However, I reckon its crucial to offer understanding, empathy, and support to your childeven when life gets sticky. Love and compassion should always trump pride, binding families together no matter what surprises crop up.
