Melissa Threw Her Daughter-in-Law Out Because She Was Convinced Her Grandson Wasn’t Really Hers

Three years later, she bitterly regretted it all…

Margaret shouted at her daughter-in-law: “Take your child and leave this house at once. Hes not ours.” Adam had trusted you so much! The only thing Emily could do was gather her son into her arms and weep. Margaret, throughout the entire pregnancy, had insisted again and again that her daughter-in-law was not carrying her son’s child. Adam had always been the apple of his mother’s eye, tethered close and obedient his whole life. Not even marriage could shake off Margarets control. And Emily could do nothing but look upon her husband through a haze of tears.

“Adam, why do you let your mother tear me apart over every little thing? What have I done to deserve this?”
“Patience, darling. You know how mother is.” But the moment Margaret declared that the newborn wasnt Adams son, all patience shattered. There was nothing left for Emily to salvage. She packed up her things, the babys tiny bits and bobs, and went home to her parents. But it wasnt the leaving that hurt mostit was that on the day she left, Adam didnt even try to stop her.

The mother-in-law rejoiced in her victoryfinally, life could return to the way it was. She busied herself with memories, wishing back those old evenings, imagining Adam coming down the high street from work, sitting together at the old kitchen table, sharing dinner, sipping tea, and making gentle conversation.

Then, one evening, the unthinkable happened. Adam was walking home late from the office on one of those foggy London nights when a stranger leapt from the shadows, struck him, and robbed him of all he hadeven his sense. Tragically, Adam never awoke again, and slipped quietly from this world.

Margaret nearly lost her wits. Night after night, she wandered into Adams empty room, her hands trailing over his worn jacket, his books, and each time tears streamed down her cheeks.

Meanwhile, Emily thrived. She was radiant, skipping down to collect her son from the nursery school; at work, she was promoted, and at home her favourite man prepared supper for her. Her little boy brought home gold stars and stories from school, showering her with pride.

One day, Emily saw Margaret. She barely recognised her former mother-in-lawshe looked like a woman lost to the streets, stripped of everything she once was.

Oh, thats Adam, Margaret murmured through tears. Yes, Adam…
She sobbed, Please, forgive me. Ive ruined not only your family, but my own. Im the most wretched woman alive. Pity rose in Emily. Sometimes now, she would allow the old grandmother to see her grandson and speak to him, once in a while, beneath a distant, dreamlike sky.
