My brother was utterly convinced of his artistic talents and chose to quit his job as a waiter while his wife was on maternity leave. Unfortunately, our family was the only one burdened by the consequences of his decision.

It baffles me to think who ever gave my brother the idea that he possessed artistic talent during his school years. This only led to a misplaced sense of confidence and self-worth. When my brother proudly revealed his newfound talent to our parents, they decided to support him by enrolling him in an art class. However, after just a handful of lessons, he arrogantly concluded he knew it all and refused to attend any further classes.

Our parents hoped hed eventually move past his artistic ambitions before finishing secondary school, but he persisted and even attempted to get into an art college. Sadly, he wasn’t accepted, as his paintings failed to impress. Still, he stubbornly insisted that talent didnt require a diploma, and he continued painting regardless.

Our father, however, disagreed with his approach and decided to cut off financial support, which made for an uneasy relationship at home. Although he was allowed to continue living with us, he received no pocket money or financial help whatsoever. Resigned, he moved out and found work as a waiter, while still pursuing his art on the side.

He met Emily, a girl who admired his artistic flair and him, and eventually moved in with her. Eventually, someone bought one of his paintings. This only inflated his ego, and he quit his waiting job to focus solely on his art.

With Emily becoming the sole provider after her maternity leave, they faced serious financial difficulties. He picked up a job at a local café but soon left again to immerse himself in his creative pursuits. This decision, unsurprisingly, led to a lack of money for basic needs like food. Our mother couldnt bear to see her grandchild go without, so she stepped in and bought groceries for them.

In time, my brother and Emily had three children, but Emily still wasnt able to work due to extended maternity leave. My brother kept painting and sold a few more pieces over five years, though the earnings were meagre.

Their financial well-being hinged largely on me and our parents, as we continued to support them. I had to help provide and sustain his family. Looking back, Ive learned that real talent needs not only determination but also humility and sensibility if one hopes to succeednot just for oneself, but for those who depend on you.

Mila sat on the floor for ages, unable to move; her fingers trembled so fiercely that she could barely unwrap the package. The fabric was thick, old, yet surprisingly clean—not a rag, not something tossed aside at random. Someone had wrapped it carefully, smoothed the folds, as if protecting not just an object, but a secret that must be guarded at all costs.

Emily sat on the floor for quite some time, unable to move. Her fingers shook so badly that opening the...

I was ten when my father, instead of calling me to breakfast, silently led me outside. That morning, the frost on the window looked like intricate lace, and the air stung my lungs. I wanted to hide under the duvet, pretend I hadn’t heard the creak of the door, that I wasn’t the boy whose turn it was to care for the firewood today.
