The Recipient Was Rude to Me
Ive always prided myself on being a good person, never greedy. If someone was in need, I wouldnt hesitateId give what I could, just like the Bible says, sharing with others when you have the chance.
One wintry afternoon, I decided to give away an old coat for free. It was hardly worn, only a handful of times, and still in lovely condition. It seemed a waste, letting it gather dust in my flat, especially when someone out there might desperately need warmth in the biting English winter.
So, I posted an offer in a local community group online. I didnt have to wait longwithin the hour, I received a message from a woman wanting to collect it. We arranged to meet that evening at nine.
Hours passed. Then, quite suddenly, it was midnight when I was startled by a loud knocking at my door. Heart hammering, I called out, Who is it? Through the door, a brusque reply: You promised me the coat. We agreed for nine and now its twelve. Cant you see people are asleep at this hour? Lets do this tomorrow.
She snapped back, No, not tomorrow. I want it now!
I was on the verge of sending her awayher rudeness was astonishingbut in the end, I decided to give her the coat, swallowing my frustration. As I handed it over, she looked at me coolly and declared, Im not going to try this on out here. I have to see if it fits first.
I thought to myself, whats there to try? Its free. You want to try it on the landing? At midnight? My children are asleep. But she pushed, Well, I’ll just use the lift, then.
She snorted dismissively, snatched the coat without so much as a thank you, and marched off into the night.
Despite everything, I handed over that coat. But never in my life had I witnessed such sheer cheek. I swore to myself that night: never again. Some people simply dont know how to appreciate kindness!
