Please Take Care of My Son as His Nursery Has Closed Due to Quarantine

When my husband filed for divorce, I packed my things and took my two young children to move back in with my parents in Birmingham. It was impossible for me to manage everything aloneI had to find a way to work and care for the children. Back then, my eldest, Emily, was only three, and little Lily had just turned two.

I took out a mortgage and tried to rebuild our lives from scratch. At first, I kept things simplejust a polite good morning or evening to our neighbours, nothing more.

Then, by chance, I met a man named Thomas. He lived a few doors down and had a young son. Occasionally, Id spot Thomas with a woman, so I always assumed she was his wife. Admittedly, I found myself drawn to himmostly to his warm, cheerful mannerbut I certainly had no intention of trying to form a relationship with a married man.

One afternoon, he popped round and offered to fix my dripping tap. As a thank you, I made us both a cup of tea. During our chat, I learned that the woman Id seen was simply a nanny, and not his wife. Thomas explained hed had trouble keeping a reliable nanny. His wife had tragically passed away the previous year, and he didnt have any family left. Thats when I thought, maybe, just maybe, there might be something here.

We started chatting moresometimes on the phone, sometimes wed take the kids out for a ramble in the park. One day, while my parents were visiting, Thomas popped in rather flustered.

How are you, Sarah? I wonder if you might help me. The nurserys closed for a bit because of an outbreak, and I need to dash to worknannys off ill again. Could you watch James for me?

Of course, no problem! I told him.

Thomas handed over a whole bag full of clothes, snacks, and several detailed notes explaining Jamess routine. He said hed ring to check in, but I didnt realise just how serious he wasevery thirty minutes, hed call for an update on what James had eaten, what he was wearing, whether wed had any fresh air

When he came back to collect his son, Thomas was utterly scandalised that James was dressed in a red shirt, instead of the blue one hed specifically mentioned in his notes. Instead of a thank you, I received an endless stream of complaints. Still, as he left, he said, Actually, Ill be bringing him round again tomorrowalright?

Even on the busiest days, I never said no. Then, out of nowhere, I ended up in hospital. Thomas rang and shouted down the line because I hadnt opened the door. I explained Id been taken in poorly. He abruptly hung up.

After that, Thomas offered once to mind Emily and Lily. I said noI needed to work. That one moment was the end, really. The calls dried up, and our walks stopped. After that, when we bumped into each other at the front door, it was just a brief nod.

I genuinely thought he might be my chance at happiness; but in the end, Thomas just used me for help. Now, I hope that someday Ill meet a man who makes me feel like nothing is missing from my world. The lesson Ive taken from all this? Dont mistake convenience for companionshiptrue kindness should go both ways.
