At work, the secretary suddenly felt unwell, so she stepped outside; sitting on a bench, she closed her eyes, and when she came to, she saw an elderly man attempting to remove her bracelet.

At the office, the secretary suddenly felt as though the world was tipping sideways. Clutching her notebook and forcing a polite smile through exhaustion, she struggled to keep up as the boardroom swirled around her. The air inside felt thick, almost syrupy; words from the Director blurred into a distant echo. Her temples thudded, heart racing like wild horses galloping across an unseen moor.

Pressed under invisible weight, Lucy excused herself with a shaky whisper. She rose from her chair, moving with uncertain steps, barely able to hear the concern muttered behind her. The corridor elongated, surreal and soft beneath her feet, as if she were walking through a clouded memory.

Outside, the air of London was brisk and sharp. The street lamps gleamed strangely, casting odd shadows, and a gentle drizzle misted her face. Lucy staggered across the square, her limbs limp, and found herself drawn to a bench near a curious patch of lavender. Shutting her eyes, she hoped the disquiet might ebb. Her heart hammered in her chest like a frantic drum.

Time twisted; when Lucy blinked awake, an old man was hunched over her, his features blurred beneath a woollen flat cap. His hands, knobbly and careful, cradled her wrist, peering intently at the gold bracelet gleaming there.

What are you doing? Lucy croaked, trying to tug her hand away. Leave that alone. My husband gave it to me.

The mans eyes widened, deep as old church bells ringing in the fog. With a whispery voice, he said, You lost yourself because of this. Just look closely.

Lucy glanced at her braceleta solid curl of gold, one she wore every day without question. Her breath caught: streaks of dark, smudged across the metal where it touched her skin, as if a shadow had scribbled secrets on it.

Who are you? she murmured, feeling her stomach knot.

Im a retired jeweller, he replied softly. Four decades working with gold. I noticed something that most would miss.

Lucys voice trembled: What does it mean?

He lowered his tone, as if reciting a spell. Its the mark of thalliuma nasty poison. Invisible to most eyes, brushed on so thin only gold betrays its presence. It seeps through skin, gnawing away, slow and quiet. But gold darkens when it meets it.

Lucy shuddered, glancing from the bracelet to her pale hands. Echoes of her husband fluttered through her mindhis frosty words, the peculiar affection lately, always urging: Dont ever take it off, Lucy. Its my gift.

In the mist of that surreal moment, the truth became hauntingly clear.

The old man wrapped the bracelet carefully in a handkerchief, as if taming a serpent. You need to see a doctor, and the police, he said gently. Never wear this again.

Lucy nodded silently, trembling as she sat on the bench, dew pooling on her fingertips. As the citys dusk curled around her, she realised she had barely escaped the clutch of a haunting dream, waking into the strange logic of reality.
