My Brother Did Something Deeply Hurtful to Me, but Now He Needs Help—Despite My Family’s Objections, I Feel Compelled to Support Him Because He’s Still My Brother

Published

While preparing a meal to remember our late father, my brother Edwards behaviour stunned everyone. Hed been working abroad for more than fifteen years, only coming home twice in all that time, and now, on the ninth day after our father passed away, he suddenly returned. Edward seemed agitated, asking where certain things were and rummaging through our parents house.

The cook was taken aback, having noticed that hed been gone so long while my sister Harriet had been caring for both our father and mother. Yet Edward hadnt returned to say his farewells to our fatherhe was searching for something. His actions bewildered Harriet, who thought hed come back to support her during this difficult spell.

However, what Edward did was far from comforting. He questioned the ownership of various items, insisting that everything belonged to him. He produced documents, claiming that our parents had signed everything over to him twenty years earlier. He made Harriet feel guilty, suggesting she was trying to take his house from him. Hurt and in tears, Harriet eventually left the home, accompanied by others who were equally unsettled by Edwards behaviour.

Despite the tension, Edward stayed on for another week, changing the locks and fitting bars to all the doors and windows before returning to his wife. Sometime later, a neighbour from Edwards residence abroad delivered worrying news that he was gravely ill, and the outlook was not good. His health began to deteriorate slowly, just as our fathers had done. When his wife learned just how unwell he was, she urged him to return home, now viewing him as a burden.

Still, Harriets dedication to our family is unwavering. Despite the hurt Edward caused her, she believes that he is her brother and that she must look after him. Her daughter, however, is anxious that Harriet will end up sacrificing her own life and well-being for an ungrateful brother. She confronts Harriet with a difficult choice, reminding her how important it is to spend time with her and her grandchildren, who adore their grandmother.

Caught between her brothers need and her daughters plea, Harriet is torn and confused. She pities her brother for the situation hes in, but at the same time, she sees the truth in her daughters argument. The decision weighs heavily on her heart as she struggles to decide what is best for herself and her family.
