I Took a Friend with Me on Holiday, But I Had No Idea How She’d Respond to My Kindness
My husband and I have been married for seven years. Life together has been good, even wonderful at times. My husband is in business, while I work more for pleasure than necessity. However, during these seven years, we havent had any children. One day, my husband surprised me by booking us a month-long holiday abroad at a luxurious resort. I was over the moon about it. But just a few days before we were meant to leave, he told me he had urgent negotiations coming up that could determine our future, and that I would have to go without him. Of course, I was disappointedwe had planned out every day and I imagined the two of us together in this idyllic place. He suggested I invite my closest friend instead, so I wouldnt be bored, and it would do her good to get away for a while.
My friend hasnt had an easy time of it. Her mum drinks heavily and never really gave her much attention or cared about her education. She fell pregnant just after finishing secondary school and ended up having to get married. Her husband would disappear for days, and when he did show up, arguments would follow. When I told her about the trip, she was absolutely thrilled and so grateful to my husband.
A month later, after returning home, my husband collected me from Heathrow in the car. When we arrived, I discovered a beautiful candlelit dinner waiting for me, and rose petals scattered all over our bed. Everything was just perfect.
Two weeks later, I told my husband that I was pregnant. He was ecstatic. Then, when my contractions began and I was admitted to hospital, my friend rushed to my husband and told him that I’d been away for a month, suggesting that Id had an affair abroad and that the baby couldnt be his. When I found out, I thought my world had ended. I imagined nobody would pick me up from the hospital and Id have nowhere to go with the baby.
But things turned out quite the opposite. My husband came to see us, looked at our little girl, realised she didnt resemble him, but chose to take her in and raise her as his own. That very day, he told my friend to leave and never come back, and to forget about us.
