“How Much Can You Really Talk? Maybe You Should Cook for My Son!” – Anna’s Mother-in-Law Never Missed a Chance to Push Her Buttons

Olivia, came her mother-in-laws voice. Caught mid-conversation on the phone, Olivia flinched. There you are, as always, her mother-in-law remarked sourly. Olivia carried on talking, choosing to pay no attention to the comment. All you do is talk and talk; you could have at least made my son something to eat, her mother-in-law added, her tone heavy with disapproval.

Quiet, Olivia replied, trying to continue her call. Look at her! Right, then! The older woman bustled out. Once Olivia finished the conversation, she let out a long, weary sigh. She was so tired of it all. Just a year before, Olivia and her husband, Thomas, had finally managed to pay off their mortgage. The flat was only one bedroom, but it had a spacious kitchen and a sunny balcony. At last, they could think about starting a family of their own. Olivia worked from homeeven though her husband well understood it wasnt as simple as it looked. Yet her mother-in-law disagreed.

Thomass parents had lived out in the countryside, so the couple didnt visit them often. Their neighbour had long tried to persuade his parents to sell up and move, as he was looking to expand his own property. Eventually, an apartment popped up for sale right next door to Thomas. His mother, who was once stubbornly against life in the city, changed her mind overnight and sold the house. Thomass father still worked, but his mother had just retired. She grew bored in the village, but found company now that Olivia was close by. What the mother-in-law failed to realise was that Olivia spent her entire day working by phone, not just gossiping or scrolling through social mediashe had real responsibilities, all day long.

Every morning, as soon as Thomas left for work, his mother knocked on their door. At first, Olivia tried to explain, and even Thomas attempted to help, but it proved pointless. Days went by, and her mother-in-law turned up again and again. One day, the young couple decided not to open the door. Olivia tried to work as the bell rang incessantly. When the older woman began threatening to call the police, Olivia finally relented and opened up. Neither she nor Thomas knew how to escape the constant meddling, and it was becoming unmanageable. On one occasion, her mother-in-law truly took offence, but only for a day.

The very next day, she was back again with new advice and endless chatter. I cant stand it any longer, Olivia confided to Thomas one evening. She doesnt listen to you, let alone me. I know, I understand, Thomas replied, but I dont know what else to do. It was their decision to sell up and buy the flat; how could I have stopped it? Perhaps we need to find your mother something to do? Like what? Ive already searched everywhere. Silence fell between them.

How much do we have in savings? Thomas suddenly asked. Lets have a look. Why? Olivia responded, puzzled. Right now, weve just got a one-bedroom place, but if we want a family, well need more space. Maybe it’s time we look for something bigger? A bigger place? Somewhere else? Yes. Why wait? Really? Olivia threw her arms around her husband, delight written all over her face. The next day, she glided around the flat, not even bothered by her mother-in-laws arrival. Two weeks later, the couple surprised their parents with the news they were moving.

What do you mean? his mother-in-law plopped onto a chair. All right, children! But where will our future grandkids sleep? Exactly! Thomass father agreed. Mum, come now! Were only moving across to a different part of town, not another city. Please dont worry. There are plenty of neighbours your age here to befriend. And well visit, I promise! Thomas reassured her.

Strangely enough, his mother soon found friends in the building. Meanwhile, Olivia and Thomas began a new chapter, learning that sometimes, for the sake of peace and happiness, you need to set healthy boundaries with even the closest familyand that courage to start anew often brings exactly the freedom you seek.
