I Became a Mother When My Son Was Just Two Weeks Old

Published

on

So, you know, it was about two years ago when I started packing my bagsand my childsin earnest. I fitted a car seat in the back of the car, picked up a compact little heater, and headed off to the court to collect the guardianship papers.

A few hours later, I was on my way to my sons room. That was our reunion day. That whole week, every day, Id been driving sixty miles each way just to see him, then turn around and go home. It felt like the longest week Ive ever had.

He was just tiny back then. Id lay Thomas down on his tummy and daydream that he was already a part of me, as if he was truly mine. I think he might have felt the same way. In those moments, he was all peaceful and quiet.

In England, people whove adopted often call it Stork Daythe day their family welcomes a new face, the one theyve been waiting for. Everyones over the moon. The parents suddenly find real purpose, and the child gains a sense of belonging and the hope of a normal life ahead.

With my daughter, it actually took me a few months to really feel like she was my own, to truly open my heart. But with my son, it happened almost immediately. He just settled straight into my heart and our home. I still cant wrap my head around how his birth mum was able to let go. She didnt even look at her own boy. If shed just looked at him once, maybe things couldve been different. Hes impossible not to love. Maybe he was just meant to be with me. Maybe this was always meant to happen.

I call him my little miracle. Hes got such charm about him. I just hope he grows up happy. My Thomas. Honestly, its the greatest privilege in the world to be your mum.
