You Pay the Bill, Because You’re the One Using More!

Emily married right after she turned 20. Her husband, Richard, was older than her, but the age gap never bothered her. She used to stand behind Richard like a brick wallunwavering and loyal. Lately, though, shes started to regret ever getting involved with him. Heres my account of what happened.

We live in a two-bedroom flat in London that belongs to my husband. Richard has a decent job and makes good money, but hes away a lot on business trips. On my side, I run a small venture from home and study through a correspondence course. Of course, all the housework still falls to me. I do my best to keep our place tidy and make sure theres always something nice to eat.

Richard takes care of the household billsIve never been involved with that. But lately, hes started complaining that I use too much water and electricity. At first, I just brushed it off, but the nagging started grating on me.

He said, From now on, youre the one paying for electricity and water. Im working all hours, travelling for the firm. If you use it, you pay for it! Ill cover the other bills, but those two are yours. If you dont pay up, the utility company will cut you off.

I shot back, What a lovely family setup we have! Have you ever stopped to think why I use more water and electricity? Maybe because I cook, clean, wash your shirts, and work at the computer! And why all the fuss? Do you expect me to save water to the last drop, sit around in the dark, and do the washing-up in the sink with no water? Have you lost your mind?

If you dont want to pay, then fine, but Im not paying either. I can always move back in with my parents, and then I wont be counting every time I wash my hands or flick a switch. You can cook, wash, and worry about saving pennies yourself! By the way, get used to wearing shirts that arent cleaned often. Like them crisp and fresh? Ask yourself how much electricity and water the washing machine goes through for that!

After that, Richard had nothing more to say on the matter.

Its taken me some time, but I see now that standing up for myself isnt being unreasonableits just fair. In marriage, respect should run both ways, or else its just not much of a home at all.
