How a British Grandmother Left Her Newborn Grandson on the Doorstep of a Maternity Hospital

My name is Edward Smith, and Im jotting down something that happened not too long agoa night that I doubt Ill ever forget. Id just finished my shift at the library in Oxford. At sixty years old, retirement was well on the cards, but Id not quite made up my mind about slowing down. That evening, I changed out of my work clothes, slung my coat on, and prepared to head home. The rain outside was relentless, and typical of me, I hadnt brought an umbrella. Pulling my hood over my head, I set off towards the bus stop, the autumn wind biting at my cheeks.

As I hurried along, I suddenly heard the unmistakable cry of a babyshrill and desperate. There, on a bench beneath the flickering streetlamp, was an infant, bundled in a soggy blanket, not more than a fortnight old. Without a second thought, I scooped up the little lad and tried my best to comfort him.

The poor boy was soaked, so I dashed back to the library and quickly rang for the local doctor, who came round in no time. Once inside, the doctor examined the baby and muttered, Hes a healthy little chap, around two weeks, Id say. Theres no telling why someone would leave him like this. He deserves love and warmth, like any other child. Those words lingered in my mind.

Given the circumstances, I decided to stay the night at the library with him, as sleep was out of the question. Not long after, the police arrived and asked me for a statement. I couldnt bear to let go of the boyhe stayed in my arms the entire time.

A couple of hours later, the police returned, this time with a young couple in tow. The girl wept quietly, and the boy looked pale as chalk.

Lets have a look, please. He might be ours, the young woman whispered.

They both put on protective gowns and followed the nurse into the childrens room. The girl took one look at her son and broke down in tears, clinging to him fiercely as if afraid hed disappear again. I stood there, utterly bewildered, until a constable pulled me aside and explained:

Emily and James had been seeing one another in secrettheir families didnt approve. Emilys parents were hesitant, but James mother was downright cruel. When the baby was born, they hoped shed soften, maybe even come round to the idea. But she became convinced Emily had been unfaithful and flat refused to accept the boy. One evening, she offered to look after the baby while Emily and James went to the cinema, but took the opportunity to abandon the lad near the hospital.

And so, thats how it all unfolded. I imagine that little boy will never know his grandmother, and perhaps for the best. In reflecting on it all, I realised that kindness isnt just about grand gesturesits about doing whats right, even if its simply taking care of someone when the world seems cold and unkind.
