“We’ll Be Staying With You For A While Because We Can’t Afford To Rent A Flat! – My Friend Told Me.”

Im a man whos always been quite active. Even at sixty-five, I still manage to travel to different places and meet fascinating people. I look back on my younger days with a mixture of happiness and nostalgia. Holidays were easier thenone could head off to the seaside, go camping with friends and colleagues, or even take a river cruise. All these adventures could be enjoyed without spending much money.

But those days are now far behind me.

Meeting new people has always brought me great joy. Ive made acquaintances on the beach and at the theatre, and Ive managed to keep in touch with many of them over the years.

Once, my wife and I received a telegram that puzzled us greatly. We hadn’t gone anywhere, so why were we being sent such a message? Then, at four in the morning, someone knocked on our door. When I opened it, I was absolutely stunned. Standing there were Sarahan old acquaintancetwo teenage girls, an elderly woman, and a man, all loaded down with heaps of luggage. My wife and I were so taken aback that we could hardly react at first, but eventually, we let the unexpected guests into our flat. Then Sarah asked:

“Why didnt you leave for us? We sent you a telegram! Besides, the taxi cost quite a bit! Sorry, but we didnt know who sent it! Well, I had your address. Here we are. I just thought wed write each other letters, thats all!”

Sarah went on to explain that one of the girls had finished school that year and decided to go to university. The rest of the family had come along for support.

“Well stay here with you! We cant afford rent, and you live near the city centre!”

I was stunned. We werent even relatedwhy should they stay with us? We had to feed them three times a day. Theyd brought some food along but never cooked anything themselves. I ended up waiting on everyone.

After three days, I couldnt stand it any longer. I asked Sarah and her relatives to leave, not caring where they went. That set off a dreadful row. Sarah started smashing dishes and shouting hysterically.

I was truly shocked by her behaviour. Eventually, they left. But not before managing to make off with my dressing gown, a couple of towels, andby some miracleeven a big pot of cabbage stew. Ive no idea how they managed to walk out with that. The pot simply disappeared!

Looking back, I realise that sometimes, being too trusting and hospitable can lead to trouble. It taught me to set clear boundaries, and that its alright to say no when necessary.
