I Decided to Welcome My Mother-in-law Into Our Home Because She Was Seriously Ill

Published

Ever since I was a child, Ive been the sort of person who could lend a hand even to someone whod been my sworn enemy if they needed help. Never once did I picture my mother-in-law as one of those people. Despite all the stereotypes and stories you hear, my mother-in-law is a truly lovely womankind, gracious, and always polite.

Just recently, disaster struck; she became seriously ill and was admitted to hospital. Even after she was discharged, she still needed time to recover. Without waiting to ask my husband, I brought her back to our home, knowing we could look after her properly. I thought my husband would be delighted that I was caring for his mother so well, but during the drive home, she seemed rather forlorn, as if she wanted to say something but couldnt find the courage.

When we arrived, I helped her inside, made up her bed, and headed off to fix her some soup. My hope was to make both her and my husband happy. Sadly, when my husband got home that evening, things went awry.

The moment he spotted his mother resting in bed, he demanded to know why that leech was in our house and wanted her thrown out immediately. It was all I could do to stop him. If I hadnt intervened, he honestly would have cast his own mother out. Were still married, but I cant help but feel bitterly disappointed by the way he behaved.

The wedding night should be a woman’s happiest moment; I sit at my dressing table, fresh lipstick still on, as the celebratory fanfare outside slowly fades and my in‑laws retire for the night. The bridal suite glitters with opulent décor, golden light bathing the cascading red silk ribbons, yet a heavy dread settles in my heart—a foreboding premonition I cannot shake.

A soft knock on the front door jolted me. I froze who could be standing there at this hour? I...
