My Mum Is Confident and Knows How to Love! And This Man Tried to Take Advantage of That—Good Thing We Stepped In.

My mother is now 73 years old. Shes quite a modern woman for her age, and she stays active. For forty years she lived in a happy marriage with our father. My brother and I couldnt be luckier to have grown up in such a wonderful family.

Dad and Mum loved each other dearly, so when Mum was 63 and Dad passed away, she barely managed to get through it. We did everything we could to support her; we even suggested that she move in with one of us, but she kept refusing. She said her friends were here and she wanted to remain in the same cheerful flat she had shared with Dad.

As the years went by, her pain gradually eased. Eventually, conversations about Dad stopped bringing tears to Mums eyes. We could sit around the table together, recalling happy and joyful memories. Mum even seemed a bit younger.

One day, my brother, our families, and I paid Mum a visit. As we arrived, she greeted us at the door and told us there was a gentleman in the house, a friend of hers, and asked us to treat him with respect. Of course, we were a bit taken aback by the news. Up until then, Mum had always said she didnt want another relationship.

She used to say, why should she take care of a man at her age? She was better off a single woman. She didnt need any men in her life. Yet now, here was a friend sitting at the table. We all understood, as adults, what friendship could mean in this context. It looked rather like a romance. We werent sure whether we ought to say something or not. But, frankly, we didnt like the situation. On the other hand, Mum is an experienced and mature woman; she’s lived through so much. Its for her to decide what she wants to do next and whether she wishes to try for a relationship. We would certainly support her.

We sat down for tea, and the man introduced himself as Edward. He looked to be around 60, had thick, dark hair and wore an expensive suit. He gave the impression of being a businessman, but in reality, he was just a regular retiree. He talked a lot, telling jokes and funny stories. What bothered us most was that he wouldnt say anything about himself, and whenever we asked, he changed the subject. In short, we just didnt like him. To make matters worse, as soon as we met, he went to my brother and asked him for some money. That made everything immediately clear. Clear to us, but not to Mum.

With tears in her eyes, Mum asked my brother for a loan for Edward, and my brother agreed. Just two days later, we received a phone call. Edwards daughter rang to let us know her father is a swindler. He finds elderly women living alone, charms them, and lives off them. As soon as their money runs out, he disappears. Hes pulled this trick on at least ten women already. I quickly told my brother, who tried to call Edward, but his phone was switched off. The address he gave us was full of other people, too. Thats how my brother lost his money, and my mum ended up heartbroken.
