I was certain I had seen the boy my daughter brought home before. And when I finally remembered where, I rushed straight to my daughter to warn her.

My husband and I have worked tirelessly since the very start of our life together. We’ve always wanted our children to have every opportunity, to never feel that they were lacking. Thats why, after our daughter was born, my husband took on two jobs in order to provide for us. We tried our best to raise our daughter to be polite and thoughtful. The years passed. Before we knew it, we realised our little girl had grown up.

She truly was a beauty, and we never found ourselves short of young men expressing their interest. Eventually, we noticed our daughter acting rather cautiously. After a little while, we discovered the reasonshe had fallen in love. My husband and I were delighted by the news, and eagerly asked our daughter to introduce us to her chosen one. We wondered who could be so fortunate as to win her heart. She assured us she would bring him round soon to meet us.

Just recently, she told us she planned to bring him home. I spent the entire day in the kitchen, preparing all sorts of dishes, while my husband made sure the house was spotless. We both put in a real effort and eagerly anticipated the meeting. I kept a close eye on my daughter; she seemed happier than ever. Shed smile all the time, moving about as if she was floating on air. My husband and I watched her and felt an overwhelming joy that her life was going so well.

Her young man arrived, and he made quite a good impressionpolite, with a sharp sense of humour, and friendly, too. We invited them to dinner. However, throughout the evening, something tugged at my mindI was certain Id seen him somewhere before. His face was oddly familiar. Despite all the chatting and laughter, the thought refused to leave me.

Only after he left did it all come rushing back. I had seen his photograph in a news alert. He and another man had been wanted for fraud. The notice said to notify the authorities at once if seen. I told my husband and daughter straight away. My daughter burst into tears, insisting that Id made the whole thing up.

But it wasnt true. I only wanted to warn herto protect her from any trouble. After all, we care deeply whom she chooses to spend her life with. In reply, our daughter packed her things and left home.

We haven’t heard from her in a month now. She wont answer any of our calls. I am overwhelmed by guilt and doubts. Perhaps I was mistaken, and her chosen one is a perfectly decent man after all.

The older I get, the more I realise that sometimes love and concern can come across as mistrust. In our efforts to protect our children, we must remember that they, too, need room to make their own choiceseven if it means risking a mistake.
