My Brother Ruined Our Wedding by Making My Wife and Me Look Like Thieves—I’ll Never Forgive Him for What He Did!

My late mother once gave me a ring that had been handed down through generations, passing from one family member to another like an overcooked sprout at Christmas dinner. She left it to me, you see, since Im the eldest. My younger brothers were never much for family tradition, so I proposed to my girlfriend with this ring. She was over the moonhonestly, she couldnt post about it fast enough.

But a few weeks after I popped the question, my brother piped up and declared he also wanted to propose to his girlfriendusing that very same ring.

Sorry, mate, but Ive already asked my girlfriend to marry me with it, I replied, trying for diplomacy, but failing rather spectacularly.

He fired back, How can you give such a family heirloom to someone youve known for barely a heartbeat? What if it all goes pear-shaped, eh? What then?

My brother has been living with his girlfriend, Sophie, for five years, which, in family terms, is practically forever. Mum adored Sophie, but she never once mentioned that the ring was earmarked for him.

I didnt think youd marry Sophie, if Im honest. And anyway, Mum gave the ring to me because Im the eldest, I said, steadily digging myself a deeper hole.

So, we bickered. And bickered some more. Eventually, I decided there was nothing for it but to leave him off the wedding guest list. But I knew full well that missing out on a chance for drama wasnt really his style.

Sure enough, he showed up at the wedding, and unleashed pandemonium:

Ladies and gentlemen, he boomed, glass in hand, I see youve all gathered to celebrate the happy couple. But not one of you knows my brother here is a thief.

Everyone started glancing around, exchanging those classic British side-eyes and murmurs.

His brides a thief as well! The two of them have pinched our mothers wedding ring right out from under me

To no ones surprise, the festivities went downhill faster than a soggy trifle. My wife was gutted, the whole day was a washout, and Ive not exchanged so much as a birthday card with my brother in six months. Only my youngest brother and I still talk, and I cling to him like the last crumpet on the plate at tea time.

Now the youngest tells me hes getting married, and hed love for all of us to be there. The wounds are still a bit too raw, so I politely declined the invite. Now the whole family thinks Im cold as leftover Yorkshire pud. Sure, my brother and I used to get on like a house on fire, but after the way he torched the best day of my life, I cant imagine reaching out anytime soon. Some things, as they say, are just not that easy to forgiveespecially when a family ring and a ruined wedding are involved.
