How a Grandmother Left Her Newborn Grandson on the Steps of a Maternity Hospital

Published

on

Margaret was already sixty years old by then. It was about time for her to retire, but she wasnt in a hurry. That day, after finishing her shift, she changed out of her uniform and made her way home. The rain was coming down in sheets, and she didnt have an umbrella. Drawing her hood over her head, she trudged towards the bus stop. Suddenly, she caught the sound of a babys criesa newborn, only a few days old, was lying on the bench.

She gathered the little bundle into her arms and began soothing the infant as best she could. Turning quickly, Margaret hurried back to the hospital, realising the baby was soaking wet. She called for the paediatrician to take a look. Its a boy, perhaps about a fortnight old. Seems perfectly healthy. I cant say why anyone would abandon him. Every child deserves to be cherished and doted on, the doctor remarked.

Margaret decided then and there to stay on for the night shift; she knew she wouldnt be able to sleep, in any case. Soon enough, the police arrived and took her statement. Throughout it all, Margaret kept the baby closeshe simply couldnt bring herself to let go.

A couple of hours later, the constables returned, this time accompanied by a young couple. The girl was brushing tears from her cheeks, while the young man was as pale as a ghost.

Lets have a lookwe think that might be our baby, the girl said quietly.

The young couple donned hospital gowns and were taken to the childrens ward. At the sight of her son, the mother broke down completely, clutching him to her as though shed never let go again. Margaret was bewildered by it all until one of the policemen explained:

Emily and James had been seeing each other in secret, as their families didnt approve of their match. Emilys parents managed to tolerate it, but James mother took every opportunity to make life difficult for Emily. When their baby boy was born, they hoped James mother might soften, perhaps even be pleased with the news. But it wasnt to be. She was convinced Emily had been unfaithful. One evening, when the young parents were away at the pictures, James mother seized her chance and left the baby outside the hospital.

So the story unfolded. As things stood, the little boy might never know his grandmother at all.
