My wife was sleeping next to mepeaceful and content after a long day at work. Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a Facebook notification. A woman had sent me a friend request. Out of curiosity, I accepted and messaged her, Do we know each other?

Her reply was surprising: I heard youve gotten married, but I still love you.

It was someone from my past. In her profile photo, she looked stunning.

I closed the chat and glanced at my wife resting quietly beside me in our new home. She was so at ease, trusting me enough to sleep soundly in a city far from where she grew up, from her parents’ home in Birmingham. She used to spend every hour surrounded by her family. Whenever she felt upset or lonely, her mum was always nearby to comfort her; her brother and sister would crack jokes and make her laugh. Her dad would walk in with treats she lovedand now she chooses to put all her faith in me.

That thought really struck me. So I picked up my phone, pressed BLOCK, and put it aside.

I turned back, settled in next to her, and drifted off to sleep.
