At a grand wedding, during the hour when food was being served, a young boys world changed forever. That day, amidst laughter and the clatter of porcelain plates, he recognised the bride as the mother hed lost long ago. The grooms choice in that moment moved every guest to tears.

The boys name was Edmund. He was ten years old then.

Long ago, an old vagrant named Bernard had found him, a baby left beneath a bridge by the edge of the Regents Canal in London, after a dreadful, drenching storm. Edmund had lain shivering in a plastic tub, a battered red ribbon tied about his wrist. There was a damp, wrinkled note by his head: Please, take care of him. His name is Edmund.

Bernard, though he had little more than the coat on his back, took the child in. He fed him with whatever bits and bobs fate had to offer; gave whatever warmth was left in his tattered blankets. He would always say, If ever you find your mother, forgive her, lad. No one abandons a child without aching for it.

Years passed before Bernard, frail and ailing now, took seriously ill. Edmund, desperate, begged for alms outside the gates of a magnificent wedding at an old manor near Windsor. Someone kindly handed him a proper meal for the first time in days.

Then entered the bride. In that instant, he stood rooted. Wrapped round her wrist was that same faded red ribbon.

He crept forward and, barely audible, asked her if she was his mother.

She turned ashen. At seventeen, frightened of her familys expectations and the shame she feared would follow, she had secretly given birth, then left her newborn by the canal, praying a good soul would find him. She had searched, but never found him again.

The groom, seeing the exchange, stopped the ceremony. He declared before everyone that he accepted not only her, but her past. If Edmund was her son, then he was to be his as well.

And then, softly, the groom added a truth he had kept close: Bernard was his own estranged father, a man hed lost touch with years agothe very man whod shown compassion to the abandoned child.

They postponed the celebration and all drove straight to the hospital, to Bernards bedside.

The old man smiled faintly at the sight of them all together, and murmured, The heart will always find its way back to those it has loved.

For the first time in his life, Edmund felt what it was to belong. And, as fate would have it, he belonged not just to one family, but to two.
