Could this cruel, beast‑like woman be his mother? Her words rang in his ears: “You’re my youthful mistake.”

Is she really that cruel, like a cornered beasthis own mother? The words echoed in Alexs ears: You are my youthful mistake.

All Alex ever knew of himself was that he had been found, starving and terrified, on the doorstep of a babys cottage. The childs mother, perhaps still clinging to a shred of conscience, wrapped the infant in a warm blanket, tied a goathair kerchief around his neck and placed the wailing bundle in a cardboard box. She must have feared the boy would freeze.

No note recorded his name, his birthdate, or his origins. The only clue was a hefty silver pendant in the shape of an A clenched in the babys tiny fista keepsake, apparently, from his mother.

The pendant was no massproduced trinket; it bore the hallmark of a master jeweller. Investigators tried to track down the reckless mother, but the trail went cold. The craftsman who had forged the piece had died in extreme old age, and no record of the work survived in his ledgers.

The orphanage entered the child as Alex Unknown. Thus the state claimed another child as its own.

Alex spent his entire childhood in a childrens home, fully funded by the welfare system. He longed for parental love and dreamed of one day finding a mother and a father.

Something terrible must have happened for my mother to abandon me, he thought, as all the other unfortunate boys did. Shell surely come back and take me away.

When he finally left the institution and stepped into the big world, his caretaker placed the pendant around his neck and recounted its story.

So my mother wanted me to be found later? Alex asked.

Possibly! Or perhaps you simply ripped the pendant off her neck by accident. Little children love to grab things, especially when the pendant was held in your fist without a chain, the caretaker guessed.

The state gave Alex a modest flatsmall, but his own. He enrolled in a technical college, graduated, and found work in an auto garage.

He met Emily by pure chance: they collided headfirst on a busy London street. At first they merely bumped into each other, and a stack of fashion magazines flew from Emilys arms. Then Alex, apologising profusely, knelt to gather the scattered papers.

The impact was so sudden that both felt a spark in their eyes and tears well up. They stood amidst the crowd, strangers stepping around them, while they smiled at one another through the tears. In that moment Alex realised he was falling in love forever.

I must make amends for my clumsiness, he said. May I invite you for a coffee?

Emily, surprised by how easily she agreed, found his awkwardness endearing, almost like a siblings protectiveness.

You know, Alex, I feel as if Ive known you all my life, she confessed after five minutes of chatter.

You wont believe itI feel the same!

Their affection grew so strong that they never missed a call or a message, always checking in on each others wellbeing. When Alex hurt himself at work, Emily was the first to dial.

Youre me, and Im you. I feel youre my destiny, Alex whispered one evening. Its a shame I cant introduce you to my parents as my fiancée; I have none.

Emily smiled. But you have me, and Im sure my parents will like you.

One afternoon, Emilys mother, Lydia Hart, burst into the kitchen, clutching her chest. What do you mean my son from the orphanage? Have you lost your mind? Theyre all unrefined! she shouted, flinging herself into an armchair.

Mother, Alex is kind and cheerful! Not everyone can be painted with the same brush, Emily pleaded.

Exactly, dear. Before judging a person, you must see and speak with them. Bring him over, and well decide whether our hearts truly flutter, intervened her husband, Thomas Hart, a senior clerk.

Dont you see, Thomas, we raised our daughter to marry someone of good blood, not a streetwise orphan! Lydia ranted.

Thomas, suppressing a sigh, replied, Well settle this when we meet him.

Lydia, silenced, retreated to her bedroom, slamming the door.

Thomas winked at Emily. Dont worry, love. Well get through this.

Thanks, Dad! Emily kissed his cheek. Shall I invite Alex over on Saturday?

Of course! Im curious who has captured my daughters heart.

On the appointed Saturday, Alex arrived, tidy and nervous, carrying two bouquetsone for Emily, one for her motherand a modest cake. He rang the doorbell of the Hart townhouse.

Emily led him into the kitchen. Mother, Father, meet my Alex! she announced.

Thomas shook Alexs hand warmly. Lydia accepted the flowers, then went pale, as if a sudden cold had seized her voice.

After a moment, she composed herself and invited everyone to sit.

Sorry, I think I overreacted, she murmured, apologising for her outburst.

During lunch, Lydia examined Alexs pendant. Thats a remarkable piece. Not something massproduced.

Its the only memory of my mother. When they found me on the orphanage doorstep, I clutched it in my fist, Alex replied.

Lydia said little else, pushing peas around her plate. Thomas, however, found common ground with Alex: football, fishing, and a love of the countryside.

What a fine lad! Thomas declared as Alex departed.

Fine? Hes uncouth, lacking upbringing, rude Lydia snapped, her voice rising.

Lydia, have you lost your mind? What has he done to you? Thomas asked, bewildered.

Lydia turned to Emily, eyes fierce. You must end this relationshipimmediately!

She retreated to her room, the door slamming shut.

That night, Lydia lay awake, tears blurring a photograph she kept hidden in her bookshelf. The blackandwhite picture showed a young Lydia wearing a delicate necklace with a pendant identical to Alexs.

So I never lost it, she whispered. He must have taken it from me.

She slipped the photo into her pocket. I cant let Thomas and Emily see this. I need a plan.

The next morning, Lydia called Alex, pretending to apologise. Alex, could you come over in an hour? I have something to discuss.

Emily, trusting her mother, gave Lydia Alexs number without hesitation.

An hour later, Alex stood at the Hart door, his heart pounding. Lydia opened it, eyes swollen, voice trembling.

We need to talk, she said, ushering him inside.

Alex, you must end things with Emily, Lydia demanded. Swear youll keep this secret from both my daughter and my husband.

I swear, Alex stammered, feeling the weight of dread.

Emily is my sister! Lydia declared, thrusting a photograph of herself wearing the pendant at the same time as Alexs mother.

Mother? Alex asked, stunned, tears gathering. And my father?

Lydia shook her head. Thomas isnt your father. I was young and reckless; I fell in love with a soldier named Victor. He left when I was pregnant. I pretended the child was dead, gave you to the orphanage, and later married Thomas. We had you, Emily, after that.

Then what am I to you? Alex choked, his voice breaking.

Youre a mistake of my youth. You appeared uninvited, and now you threaten the life I built. Leave, disappear, and leave my family in peace, Lydia spat.

The words reverberated in Alexs mind: Is this the cruel, beastlike womanhis mother? You are my youthful mistakestill ringing in his ears.

Alex exhaled heavily, rose from the sofa, and said, Goodbye, Lydia. Ill keep your secret.

Ill tell my father everything, Thomas murmured from the hallway.

All three froze as Emily stepped into the doorway, arms crossed, eyes blazing with hurt.

I always believed you were a good person, Mother. Youre a disgrace! she shouted.

Forgive me, sister, Alex whispered, bowing his head, tears slipping down his cheeks. I must go.

He fled, feeling as if a bubble had burst, scattering his thoughts to the wind.

A few days later, Alex enlisted at the local recruitment centre, joining the armys infantry. Thomas and Emily came to see him off. Thomas clapped a firm hand on Alexs shoulder.

Stay strong, lad. Remember, were your family now. Come back to us.

Emily embraced Alex, whispering, Come back safe. We love you.

For the first time, Alex felt warmth despite his mothers abandonment. Though he had no biological mother, he now had a father and a sister who cared for him. He only regretted that his love for Emily had grown deeper than his affection for his newfound sister.

Lydia was left alone. Thomas divorced her, tired of her cruelty. She continued to blame Alex for everything, even as he disappeared from her life.

In the end, Alex learned that blood ties matter little compared to the bonds we choose. A cruel past cannot dictate the future if we open our hearts to those who truly love us. The lesson remains: forgiveness and genuine connection heal wounds that hatred only deepens.
