Dad, Meet the Woman Who Will Be My Wife and Your Daughter-in-Law.

“Dad, meet my future wifeyour daughter-in-law, Emily!” beamed Marcus, his face glowing with happiness.

“What?!” Professor Richard Hartley, PhD, exclaimed in shock. “If this is a joke, its not funny in the slightest.”

He eyed Emilys rough hands and the dirt under her nails with disgust, convinced shed never heard of soap and water. *Good Lord, thank heavens my dear Margaret didnt live to see this shame! We raised this boy with proper manners!* he thought bitterly.

“Its no joke!” Marcus shot back. “Emilys staying with us, and were getting married in three months. If you dont want to come to the wedding, fineIll manage without you!”

“Hello!” Emily grinned cheerfully, heading straight to the kitchen. “I brought pasties, raspberry jam, dried mushrooms” She listed off the items she pulled from a worn-out bag.

Richard clutched his chest as he watched her ruin the pristine white tablecloth with a stain of jam.

“Marcus, snap out of it! If this is some twisted revenge, its too cruel Where on earth did you find this clueless girl? I wont have her in my house!” the professor shouted.

“I love Emily. And my wife has every right to live in my home!” Marcus smirked, clearly mocking him.

Richard realised his son was toying with him. Without another word, he stormed off to his room.

Lately, his relationship with Marcus had soured. After his wifes death, Marcus had become wilddropping out of university, speaking to his father with disrespect, living recklessly. Richard had hoped his son would change, return to the bright, kind man he once was. But every day, they grew further apart. And now? Hed brought home this country girl. Richard knew hed never approveso Marcus had invited the one person hed despise.

Soon after, Marcus and Emily married. Richard refused to attend the wedding, unwilling to accept this unwanted daughter-in-law. He seethed, furious that a refined woman like Margaret had been replaced by this uneducated girl who could barely string two words together.

Emily, ignoring his disdain, tried to win him overbut only made things worse. Richard saw nothing good in her, just ignorance and bad habits.

Marcus, playing the dutiful husband briefly, slipped back into drinking and arguments. Richard overheard their fights, secretly pleased, hoping Emily would finally leave.

“Richard, your son wants a divorcehes throwing me out, and Im pregnant!” Emily burst in one day, tears in her eyes.

“First of all, why *out*? Youve got somewhere to go. And being pregnant doesnt give you the right to stay here after a split. I wont interfereforgive me,” he said, silently relieved to be rid of her.

Crushed, Emily packed her things, still baffled by her father-in-laws hatred. She couldnt understand why Marcus had treated her so cruelly, like a stray dog. So what if she was from the countryside? She had a heart and feelings too

Eight years passed Richard lived in a care home now, frail and weak. Marcus had wasted no timeshoving his father into a facility to avoid responsibility.

Richard had accepted his fate, knowing there was no going back. In his lifetime, hed taught thousands about love and respect. Former students still wrote to thank him Yet his own family remained strangers.

“Richard, youve got visitors again,” his roommate said after a stroll.

“Who? Marcus?” he blurted, though he knew it was impossible. His son would never visithe *hated* him.

“Dunno. They asked for you. Well? Go see!”

Richard grabbed his cane and shuffled toward the common room. Halfway down the hall, he spotted her.

“Emily,” he murmured, voice barely audible, head bowed. Guilt still gnawed at him for failing that kind, simple girl all those years ago.

“Richard!” she gasped. “Youve changed so much Are you ill?”

“A bit,” he sighed weakly. “How did you find me?”

“Marcus mentioned it. He refuses to speak to his son, but the boy keeps begging to see his dadand his grandad. Jon isnt to blame for your rejection. He needs family Forgive me, maybe I shouldnt have come.”

“Wait!” Richard pleaded. “How is he, Jon? The last photo you sent, he was only three.”

“Hes here, by the entrance. Shall I call him?”

“Yes, please!”

A brown-haired boy walked inMarcuss spitting image. Jon hesitated before approaching the grandfather hed never met.

“Hello, lad. Look how big youve grown” Richard choked up, hugging him.

They talked for hours, strolling through the care homes autumn gardens. Emily shared her strugglesher mothers early death, raising Jon alone, managing their small farm.

“Im sorry, Emily. I failed you. Thought myself clever, educated Only lately have I learned that a persons worth isnt in their manners, but in their heart.”

“Richard, weve an offer,” Emily said nervously. “Come live with us! Youre alone, and so are we Wed love to have family close.”

“Grandad, please! Well go fishing, mushroom picking Our village is lovely, and theres plenty of space!” Jon begged, clutching his hand.

“Lets go,” Richard smiled. “I failed raising Marcusmaybe I can give Jon what I missed. Besides Ive never lived in the countryside. Might be nice!”

“Youll love it!” Jon laughed.
