A wealthy widower living in a nursing home asked for my hand – after his funeral, his lawyer handed me an envelope and said, “The truth within it may be hard to bear.”

Dear Diary,

I lived in the state-funded, rather austere wing of a care home, scraping by on my meager pension, when my life turned completely upside down the day I met Arthur under the old oak tree in the courtyard. He was a wealthy, eighty-two-year-old widower, and though we came from entirely different worlds, our quiet afternoons playing chess and sharing our past sorrows bound us together.

Arthur confided in me that his children were merely waiting for him to die, especially his son Gregory, a cold and calculating man, while his daughter Evelyn remained a passive observer to it all. When Arthur’s health began to decline, Gregory arrived with a team of lawyers, trying to have his father declared incapacitated so he could seize control of the estate and remove him from the home. To protect his final days and ensure medical decisions wouldn’t fall into Gregory’s hands, Arthur asked me to marry him, making me his healthcare proxy – a request I accepted out of deep friendship and love.

During our two peaceful years of marriage, Arthur and I lived quietly as husband and wife, until one day he closed his eyes forever. Shortly after the funeral, Arthur’s solicitor handed me an envelope and warned that its contents would change how I viewed our time together. Stunned, I learned Arthur didn’t just have a few personal savings – he actually owned the entire care home, placed it into a trust fund, and named me as his sole heir.

Evelyn came to see me, confessing she had secretly helped her father after discovering Gregory’s vicious scheme. He planned to demolish the state-funded wing, toss the poor residents onto the street, and build luxury flats in its place. By transferring the institution to me, Arthur had permanently shielded the home and its residents from his son’s greed.

With the ownership deeds in my hand, supported by the solicitor and a remorseful Evelyn, I confronted Gregory when he burst into the penthouse apartment, demanding I vacate the property. When I handed him the legal documents proving the entire facility was mine, his fury turned to shock as he realised his every plan had utterly collapsed. With no legal claim left and his own sister turning against him, Gregory was forced to leave empty-handed. Now, as I watch the workers repair and cosy up the once-neglected state wing, I know Arthur’s dream is secure, and the vulnerable residents at last have true protection.
