After I Told My Wife That Her Daughter Isn’t My Responsibility, the Truth About Our Family Was Revealed

After telling my wife that her daughter wasnt my responsibility, the truth about our family came out

For a long time, Ive been the single one in the family. Even my younger brother has a wife and children. I just never had much lucksomehow, every relationship fizzled out before it became serious. All my relatives would pester me about when they could finally celebrate my wedding. Honestly, Ive been ready to settle down for ages. By the time I turned 34, Id had enough of bachelor life.

One evening, at a pub in Manchester, I spotted my colleague, Tom, chatting and laughing with a woman I hadnt seen before. We fell into casual conversation.

“Fancy seeing you here, mate. What brings you out tonight?”
“Evening, Alex. My friends in town, so we thought wed hit the city.”
“Mind introducing us?”
“Of coursethis is Heather.”
“Welcome to Manchester, Heather. Im Alex.”
“Its lovely to meet new people here. Lets be friends.”
“Do I have your friendship, then?”
“You certainly do.”

Heather was charming but modest, self-assured yet down-to-earth, all rolled into one. After talking for a while, I was sureId finally met someone I really connected with. During our conversation, she mentioned she had a daughter, Sophie, who was at school. At first, I wasnt too sure about the idea, but soon realised it wasnt such a big deal after all.

We moved in together, and for a while, things were wonderful. Sophie was out oftenat school, music lessons, or visiting her gran during holidays.

Heather was convinced there was no need for her to work; I earned a good wage, and she felt I could easily support us all. But over time, I found her requests grew. It wasnt just shopping or household costs anymoreshe wanted funds for Sophies tutors and extra classes.

“Alex, Ill need some money for Sophies new lessons. Can you give me more this time?”
“Alright, you know Im all for her development.”

It was getting more expensive every day. Prices rising constantly. Sooner or later, my patience had to run outand it did. I finally told Heather everything Id been dwelling on.

“Heather, Sophies teacher called yesterday. Theres an upcoming school trip.”
“And?”
“I want Sophie to go, but theyre asking for a lot of money. I dont want her to miss out, since everyone elses parents agreed. Now theyre waiting on our answer.”

“Heather, Im honestly struggling with these constant expenses for activities and extras. Why doesnt her biological father chip in at all?”
“You knew I had a daughter when we met. If you planned to be stingy, you should have left me alone. Im shocked at you!”

She burst into tears, locking herself in the bedroom. I mulled things over and decided to apologise, handing her the money she needed. Even so, it left me unsettled. I couldnt understand why her ex refused to contribute for Sophie. Once more, I tried to talk it through.

“Heather, I dont want to argue, but why does your former husband pay nothing for Sophie?”
“I wont accept a penny from him. I dont want it.”

“I dont think thats fair. So Im left paying for someone elses child while her actual father does nothing. He doesnt seem to care at all.”
“So you think of yourself as a stranger? And here I was thinking you considered Sophie part of your family. I thought you were a good man.”

“Dont accuse me. I could just as well point fingers.”
“Thats your choice. I wont ask him for money. If you dont want to help, then dont! Ill work for it myself. But we wont beg. If youre tired of responsibility, then maybe we just end it here.”
“Why are you so angry? Cant we talk this through properly?”

“I dont need any discussions. Im off to bed. You can sleep there if you wantIm not in the mood.”

So I took the sofa. I barely slept, tossing and turning, thinking about our argument. Turns out Heather is fiercely proud, and Im stuck being the outsider with her daughter. As Sophie gets older, the issues and the costs will only grow. And her father? He just carries on, oblivious. One day, I stumbled across a photo of Heathers ex on her laptopflashing a luxury car, dressed in expensive clothes. Hes clearly not hard up. He could easily support his own daughter, if asked. It was Heathers pride stopping her. I resolved to speak to him directly.
