Everyone Thought the Young Woman Looked After the Neighbour’s Grandmother Just to Inherit Her Estate—But They Were All Wrong

Published

Everyone believed the young woman was looking after the neighbours grandmother simply to gain an inheritance, but they were all mistaken.

Emily never knew her fatherhe abandoned her mother when Emily was just a baby. But she had her mother and her grandfather, who raised her with love. Tragically, when Emily was ten, her mother fell ill with cancer and passed away. Emily was left with her grandfather, who became her everythingher guardian, father figure, and confidant.

Her grandmother had died even before her mother, so it was just Emily and her grandfather against the world. By the time she became an adult, Emily was working and caring for her aging grandfather, who had grown too frail to leave his bed. She understood that his days were sadly drawing to a close.

Emily, love, I need to ask a favour of you, her grandfather said one evening.

What is it, Grandad? she replied.

You know, your grandmother had a wonderful friend, Mrs. Thompson. They were like sisters. While your grandmother was alive, she would always visit her, helping with little jobs around the house. When your gran passed, I kept up the visits to Mrs. Thompson. Promise me, when Im gone, youll look after her. Dont let her be all alone.

I promise, Grandad, Emily said softly.

The very next day, her grandfather passed away. Emily was now alone in the world. She began visiting Mrs. Thompsons house, tidying, cooking her favourite meals, and keeping her company. Oddly, the elderly woman had family, yet none of them ever seemed to care. Three years went by, and when Mrs. Thompson eventually passed on, her relatives suddenly surfaced.

At the funeral, the family rummaged through the flat, obviously searching for money or hidden keepsakes. Emily simply took a cherished photograph as a memento and quietly left. The next day, one of Mrs. Thompsons sisters turned up at Emilys door.

Emily, about Mrs. Thompsons will the woman began.

What is it? Emily asked, puzzled.

She left everything to you in her will. Of course, you arent really anybody to her, while were her family. Admittedly, I didnt look after her much, but life sometimes gets in the way. If you could see it in your heart to give it to us, Ill try to repay you in some way.

Thats fine. Pay me what you think is fair, Emily responded.

Did Emily hand everything over to the family? No, she donated the entire inheritance to a childrens home.

Sometimes, the kindest acts are done not for reward or recognition, but simply because its the right thing to do. True compassion is its own reward, and real generosity asks for nothing in return.
