His Mum and I Were Prepared for This Day to Come, and It Did! We Didn’t Expect It to Happen So Young, but We Welcomed His Girlfriend with Open Arms.
I love my son dearly and, ever since he was born, I’ve done all I possibly could to give him the best life.
My wife and I have always strived to fulfil his every wish. Hes always dressed in the finest clothes and attended all manner of clubs and lessons we could afford. Even so, for all that hes ever wanted, hes treated his mother and me with respect and kindness.
I work day and night to provide for him, but I never mind the effort. Somehow, I always find a moment for him whenever he needs me.
My son has always been a wonderful boy, and I knew that eventually, as time passed, he would grow interested in girls. My wife and I braced ourselves for the day, and of course it arrived sooner than we expected. When he told us about his new girlfriend, we welcomed the news happilythough it was a bit surprising so early on. The only thing we asked of him was to invite her round for dinner. He agreed without protest, and even said hed ask her along the next time he saw us.
My wife liked the suggestion, too. We were confident hed chosen a lovely girl, but still wanted the chance to meet her ourselvesto put our minds at ease. After all, hes still our young lad.
When he finally brought her home, I couldnt help but feel a jolt of surprise. At first, she seemed ever so sweetpolite and friendly enough. But as the evening wore on, a strange sense of unease set in. I began to see through her cheerful manner, and realised she was only interested in herself, a trickster hiding behind a smile.
I work with the local constabulary, and the oddest thing happenedher face flickered in my memory like something glimpsed from a half-remembered photograph. I recalled a file: this girl had been under suspicion for pulling off online cons, pretending to be without family, wheedling pounds out of boys across the web, then vanishingleaving them blocked and bewildered. There were reports stacked high with the names of tricked young men.
I told my son everythingabout her falsehoods, her recordbut he refused to believe me. He shouted, convinced Id made the whole story up just to storm on his happiness. Then, in true dramatic fashion, he packed a bag and left, heading to his girlfriends home without a glance back.
We havent had a word from our boy for a month now. I find myself awake at night, doubtingwondering if perhaps Id been mistaken, or if shed somehow changed, or if perhaps someone had set her up.
If you found yourself wandering through this strange tanglewhat would you do in my place?
