I just found out he has kids – I don’t need to take on someone else’s baggage.

Mum shared a secret with us shed bought a flat.

The flat was just outside the city centre. She only asked us not to tell anyone the address, so no one would accidentally pop round especially my wifes parents, who had issues with drinking.

At first, I wasnt sure whether to be upset or pleased about it. There wasnt any choice given. Like a bunch of thieves, we moved our belongings into the new flat early in the morning, trying not to draw attention. I needed to find a job near our new place, and my wife was getting used to living there. Both of us felt uneasy inside. What if her parents found us again and started visiting?

I soon landed a job as a lift attendant. The very next day, my colleague and I had to rescue a woman trapped between floors in a lift.

We managed to open the doors and help her out. She was immensely grateful, clearly shaken by the ordeal. I tried to reassure her with kind words. She wasnt like the others, and I didnt want to let go so soon.

From that moment on, I started to believe in love at first sight. I insisted on walking her home, holding her gently because she couldnt quite stand after the scare. Tears sparkled in her eyes and she was trembling all over. I longed to comfort her, to hold her close. She went inside, and the door closed behind her.

That evening, as I tucked my daughter into bed and my wife headed off to the bathroom, I found myself replaying the days events with a mixture of sadness and excitement. I couldnt get that girl out of my mind. I simply couldnt help it she was lovely, gentle, and fragile.

The next day, after work, I went back to her door. I told my neighbour I was a distant cousin from her hometown. In just ten minutes, I learned that her husband was a heavy drinker, utterly lazy, and that they had two children.

This news cheered me up. It meant I could return to my wife and daughter and feel at peace. I don’t need other peoples troubles or their children I have my own life and my own family to care for.

I felt relieved.
