It Seems My Husband’s Parents Only See Me as a Means to Get Grandchildren, and I Only Realised This by Accident

Before I married my husband, Jack, I had a fairly cordial relationship with his parents. It wasnt flawless, but their warmth made things feel comfortable enough. Since Jack was living with them at the time, I often chatted with his mum and dad during my visits. Of course, minor disagreements would bubble upover which soap to watch, perhapsbut I always tried to steer clear of any real arguments, usually siding with my mother-in-law just to keep the peace. For a while, everything seemed fine. But then our wedding day arrived, and everything changed.

After the celebrations, we returned to Jacks parents house, where they laid on an enormous spread and fussed endlessly, insisting I eat more for the sake of my health. At first I laughed it off, thinking it was all in good humour. But gradually, their comments turned more persistent, more personal. Only a month later, my mother-in-law offhandedly remarked that Id put on weighteven though there was no real change at all. A few weeks after, I discovered I was pregnant and was simply over the moon. I told Jack, but asked him to keep it under wraps from his parents, wanting to surprise them in our own time. Around then, we finally moved into our own flat.

But as my pregnancy progressed, Jacks family began dropping by far more often, their concern for my health becoming a daily refrain. I started to suspect Jack had broken his promise. He insisted they just cared about their daughter-in-law and there was nothing strange about it. Still, when he finally let the cat out of the bag, everything turned on its head.

Jacks dad now hounded me to eat even more, practically begging me to leave work for fear Id wear myself out. Jacks mum, on the other hand, couldnt keep her hands off my belly, constantly producing some comment or another about me getting bigger. Their visits doubled, sometimes more, and each one brought a barrage of questions about how I was feeling. It dawned on me, slowly and painfully, that they didnt see me as a person anymore, only as a means to bring them a grandchild. My own wishes and feelings barely factored into their world. Looking back, I realised theyd been trying to fatten me up from day one.

I confided in Jack about how miserable Id become, but sadly, he dismissed my fears as baseless simply saying I was worrying for nothing. Feeling alone, with no one in my corner, I took matters into my own hands. That night, I packed our things, asked Jack to change the locks just in case, and quietly booked us a holiday away. The very next day, we left, desperate for a breath of peace and the chance to find some much-needed clarity amidst the storm.
