Living Together with My 86-Year-Old Mum: Reflections on My Quiet Life at 57 Without Marriage or Chil…

I live with my mum. Shes 86 now.

Life took a few odd turns for me; I never got around to marrying or having any children. Quite peculiar how things end up, really. I recently turned 57another candle on the cake. The two of us marked the day quietly at home; just Mum and me. No guests to invite. I havent got friends, and were a bit thin on familyjust us.

We muddle along side by side, always looking out for each other. Truly, I dont know what Ill do when shes gone. Still, Mum is in surprisingly good spirits! Even if each year chips away a bit more at her health, she doesnt give up easily. She still takes herself out for a little stroll most days.

Im retired myself, but I still do a bit of work on the side. Our state pensions arent exactly enough to keep us in the manner to which wed like to become accustomed. But I try not to let it get me downafter all, Im lucky to have my lovely mum with me. Other people have it far worsesome are without a roof over their heads, friends, relatives, or a spare penny.

Mum and I live a rather quiet, peaceful life. Most evenings, youll find us with a pot of tea, knitting away, or watching our favourite British dramas and old sitcom reruns. At the weekend, I do a bit of bakingVictoria sponge, scones, the lotand sometimes invite the neighbours round. They have a natter about their families, and its heartwarming to hear about their joys. Im genuinely pleased for people who have found happiness, and I always cross my fingers that misfortune skips right by us.

Thats our life, really. I just hope it carries on in this gentle, ordinary way, for me and for Mum, for as long as possible.
