Margaret, a 67-year-old woman, had always kept up her daily ritual of strolling through the local park. Yet, on this particular day, a wave of sorrow washed over her, pulling her thoughts back to years gone by. Back then, life seemed to be going splendidlyher family was thriving and content. Then, one day, fate dealt her a cruel blow. Her son, whose career was just beginning to soar, was suddenly lost to a tragic drowning. No one could fully explain the circumstances surrounding his deathit remained shrouded in mystery.

Unable to bear the heartbreak, Margarets husbands health began to falter. He became withdrawn, spending less and less time at home, his presence fading until a tragic accident took him, too. So, at the age of fifty, Margaret was left a widow with no one to lean on. She had her pension, which was enough to get by, but from then on, her life grew more and more secluded. Fortunately, there was little David, a neighbours son, who often popped over for a visit.

One afternoon, as Margaret made her way back home, she noticed an ambulance pulled up on her drive. Through the anxious crowd, she spotted David standing by the stretcher, pleading tearfully for his mother to wake up. A police officer was asking around for someone to look after the boy, but Margaret stepped forward without hesitation, offering to take David with her. The officer jotted down her name, letting her know that social services would soon become involved. Margaret was determined to keep David with her, though she was painfully aware that the choice was not really hers to make.

It was another month before the child welfare officials arriveda month during which Margaret and David had become accustomed to each others company. She cared for him as if he were her own, cooking his favourite meals and singing lullabies as he drifted off to sleep. Margaret voiced her hopes of being allowed to keep David, but the officers pointed to the law, suggesting that her age would make it difficult for her to be granted permission. Their discouraging words stung, but Margaret knew with certainty that she could never truly be at peace for the rest of her days if she had to let David go.
